It's been an adventure since my last post here. The debacle with my 600PF repair has concluded... ended up getting my original lens back after confirming that the replacement refurb they sent me also had a gritty-feeling MF ring, and the new copy the Service team purchased also felt the same as my original lens (that they still had at the time). So, I just had them send me back my original lens. Guess that's how it's supposed to feel, I guess
It's good having my lens back because cause it's a known quantity, the IQ from it is exemplary. Shortly after receiving it, I went on vacation to Florida, and ironically returned to the place where it all started: Ft. DeSoto State Park. Was MUCH more diligent this time around, to the point where my hands didn't touch the sand, and I didn't use a strap so as to prevent myself from letting the lens hang at my side and potentially brush up against errant sand (that's how it happened last time). Didn't really shoot with the 600PF all that much though, as the 100-400 was killing it due to the versatility with the friendly shore birds, but the shots I did get from the 600 are what you'd expect: sharp, clear, superb.

More recently though, aka yesterday, went out to a local oak savannah and tried for some Red-headed Woodpeckers, but ended up just shooting Nuthatches. These were shot with the 1.4TC, and the IQ is above reproach:
