I'm not sure what to do at this point, I don't want to keep bothering them and/or swapping lenses, but I also don't want to settle with a lens that isn't 100%. Wish I could get them to credit me for the refurb and pay the difference to get a new one :ROFLMAO: Will call them again today and see what options I have. Ugh... just want this to be over.

The lens is awesome, so light and extremely sharp.
I shot this yesterday experimenting with the Z TC1.4

Tell them to send you a new one since they couldn't get it right over several attempts. Don't settle for another refurbished unit

Nikon Service is acquiring a brand new 600PF in order to see if its MF ring behaves the same as the refurb unit and my former copy. I sent them a couple of videos exhibiting the sound, so am now just waiting to see what their verdict is. If the new lens doesn't have the same issue, I'm going to offer up for it because I'd be willing to pay for peace of mind. I don't expect them to just give me a new lens though, that'd be crazy.

Matthew, the MF ring on my 600PF makes no sound whatsoever that I can hear. I know this is frustrating and I hope they’re able to make it right for you.

What's stunning to me is the fact that nikon services didn't even check to determine whether the MF ring made any noises before sending you it's replacement. That was the original complaint correct? And I will say this, if you purchased this lens new, and it's under warranty then they owe you another working lens without issues. Several folks on this forum , myself included confirmed that the MF ring on the 600PF is silent. Nikon services needs to get this right... They have inconveniencd you several times now. This level of support is worrisome , I expected better from NPS. I know we're are all interested in the outcome here. Good luck 🤞

Yeah, the lens was under warranty when I sent it in the first and second time last year for this, but I’m way out of now. That, and I’m not NPS, just gen pop. In all honesty, it could be worse, they could just tell me I’m SOL and send me packing with a hefty repair bill, but so far they’re methodically working to get to the bottom of this, so I’m thankful for that. Hoping this reaches a thrilling conclusion sometime soon though!

We got a stretch of days here where it isn't inhumanely cold outside, so I took advantage and went on a little outing to see if I could get my first bird photos of the year. Haven't taken a photo since November-ish, so I've been fiending for something, anything to shoot. It's been a slow year in general though, neighbors all say they aren't seeing nearly as many birds at their feeders this winter, and the few times I've been out have been atrociously bereft of activity. Today though, had a solid showing of winter species at a spot a few miles from my home.

This replacement 600PF is just as sharp as my previous, so if it ends up I have to keep it, no worries on that front.

Very nice captures! So you already have a replacement 600pf in hand ? If so, that was a fast turnaround!

Migrating waterfowl numbers in West Texas are way down this year which is making a bit boring. However, every now and then I can go by a playa with water and get a few pics.

It's been an adventure since my last post here. The debacle with my 600PF repair has concluded... ended up getting my original lens back after confirming that the replacement refurb they sent me also had a gritty-feeling MF ring, and the new copy the Service team purchased also felt the same as my original lens (that they still had at the time). So, I just had them send me back my original lens. That's how it's supposed to feel, I guess 🤷‍♂️

It's good having my lens back because it's a known quantity, I’ve had it since new and I know it’s history (vs. a refurb, which I’ve no idea about how it was treated). the IQ from it is exemplary. Shortly after getting it back, I went on vacation to Florida, and ironically returned to the place where it all started: Ft. DeSoto State Park. Was MUCH more diligent this time around, to the point where my hands didn't touch the sand, and I didn't use a strap so as to prevent myself from letting the lens hang at my side and potentially brush up against errant sand (that's how it happened last time). Didn't really shoot with the 600PF all that much though, as the 100-400 was killing it due to the versatility with the friendly shore birds, but the shots I did get from the 600 are what you'd expect: sharp, clear, superb.

More recently though, aka yesterday, went out to a local oak savannah and tried for some Red-headed Woodpeckers, but ended up just shooting Nuthatches. These were shot with the 1.4TC, and the IQ is above reproach:

I also ordered a 600TC yesterday, but just now cancelled it. Objectively, I just cannot see how it'd improve my photography at this point, and it's a ton of money to be fronting if there isn't a 100% need being addressed. Yeah, it would have been awesome not having to spend 10 seconds swapping in the 1.4TC yesterday, but is it worth $14k? I'm not gear limited, I'm subject limited, throwing more money at gear won't move me forward in any meaningful way.

A rare voice of reason in an otherwise gear obsessed hobby. Recently I had a relative (also a Nikon shooter) trying to tell me I should get the 400 f2.8 TC. They must think I am richer than I am because there is no way I could afford that, but also I could not carry around a lens that heavy (same goes for 600 f4 TC). Even the Z 180-600 was just a tad bit too heavy which is why I sold it to get this 600 PF lens (which is stellar, though I do have to usually carry a second body with a zoom).

Glad you put the whole episode behind you and are back shooting. Nice work here.

Well glad you have your lens back . Photos are certainly sharp therefore I believe you have a great copy (that's what matters right?). The photos you posted look excellent. I'm still amazed at how well this lens takes the 1.4TC...its as if it weren't there at all... It's super sharp with fast consistent auto focus ..only one other lense that I've tested handles a TC this well, and that's the Sony 300GM...but you can't get to 840mm with that lens. Tyl

I once shot a Canon 600 f/4 III, and eventually sold when I adopted the D500/500PF. That was a major turning point for my photography, it felt very liberating realizing I could get photos I was happy with, without the need to shoot the best/heaviest lens.

Thank you! It def takes the 1.4TC well, enough that it made it ok for me to let go of my 800PF. There are times I miss that beauty of a lens, but the times I find I’m shooting past 600 aren’t all that often, and this combo delivers:

I’ve seriously considered the A1II/Sony 300GM combo as well, but similar to the debate b/w choosing the 400TC vs. 600TC, I concluded that I need 800mm way more often than 300/400, and the 300 caps me at 600. All in all, it’d be a massive financial hit and and a headache to switch systems for not enough gain to justify.

Actually I did own the A1, and had rented the 300GM and converters...but I actually prefer the native 600mm pf over that setup. When I had the 300GM, the 2xTC was glued to it. I never used the 1.4, as 420mm is short for most of what I shoot. So in the end , the cost to benefit won out. I decided to move to Nikon for their PF lenses. I do not regret it one bit. But that is me. Take care

Spring birding has just kicked off with the recent return of Red-winged Black Birds, Grackles, and Song Sparrows here in Wisconsin. Lots of activity abound as the birds seem to have woken up from the winter lethargy, allowing for more opportunities to make some photos as the weather continues to warm.

Great lighting on this. My cats would like to order two of them for Easter please.
