Official Nikon Z9 Launch, Info, and Discussion Thread

Sssshhh. Dont tell everyone. They have 64,128 and 512 listed at "in stock"

Looks like they have a surcharge of about $50 on those...

For me, this is the reason not to purchase a Z9 and hold off for a Z90. Use that the savings not purchasing a Z9 and put that towards a z 400mm f/2.8. ;)

Now that I've ordered a Z9, I'm planning to work two extra months before I retire. Instead of retiring on my 84th birthday, I'll just wait until I'm 84 plus two months. Future lens purchases may cause me to have to work until I'm 85. Never mind if I'm dead before then, I'm going to still have to work! ;)

Nikon product manager Marc Cruz's introductory video on the Z9 mentions 360 compatible F mount lenses for the Z9 generally (and not in the context of high speed shooting). The Z9 brochure says that 94 F mount lenses work with "high-speed continuous shooting." Obviously manual lenses and screw-drive lenses would not autofocus. I don't know the number of other F mount Nikkors to know if 94 picks up all the others?

I have a couple of old lenses that no one seems to want to buy: Great for their time, but is so slow no camera can turn them into speed demons. Seriously, they feel like it takes a couple of seconds of searching - blows the heck out of 20 fps. I wouldn't expect older AF lenses to perform as quickly as more current ones - but they work as well as ever. The whole Z system seems to work well if one accepts the limitations of legacy lenses - at least they work with the new bodies. On the other hand, I still have several pre-EOS lenses for which Canon doesn't have adapters for the times they changed mounts without warning. Not big enough to be doorstops, and they roll.

If it's any consolation, the media backlog will probably clear before the Z9 backlog 😂
Either that, or I shoot the Z9 at a reduced frame rate for a while. I'll have to experiment with frame rates to determine the sweet spot speed I need for most of my shooting. If I can't get the Delkin Black 128 GB by the time I get my camera, I'll just get the fastest CFE card that I can find, as long as the min write speed is over 1400 MB/s.

And we should be pricing new cards now? That's optimism.
The card advertised as in stock was $50 more than the ones I'd seen out of stock. But the extra $50 was due to the issue of the price offered is in Canada dollars.

Optimism? Call it that if you will. I'll call it preparedness.

I am addressing the aperture blades in the lens having to open and close if you aren't using it wide open. So say you have an F4 lens and you are using it at F5.6 when you take an image the lens stops down slightly closing the aperture blades inside of the lens and then reopening them. So you can imagine how quickly everything has to move at 120 FPS. Some older lenses aren't designed with this in mind. I suspect Nikon found a work around but none of us actually know how they did it yet.
Does the mirrorless camera lens have to step down and open back up with every shot to maintain focus? I thought that they used contrast focusing as opposed to phase detection, and that contrast focusing doesn't have the aperture limitations that phase detecton does.

Would like to hear your thoughts after checking it out.

No regrets with my pre-order. There were just a few of us so it was a very causal presentation/Q&A. He didn't have the S-line 100-400, but they will have a copy tomorrow at the Denver launch event. Solidly built like you would expect, love the tilt screen. Button placement was not my favorite with everything being moved off of the left side and the 3rd function button was hard to reach with my small hands, but with a little time, muscle memory will kick in on the new layout.

He did say that S lenses were a development priority and while he couldn't say they will be using PF technology in them (I asked regarding that small 800mm), he did say that since all of the other lenses in the picture are to scale, that it's fairly safe to say the projected ones will be as well.

Other things mentioned....Dynamic range will be on par (ish) with a D850. Firmware will trickle down to other Z's, but some things are limited due to the smaller processing power in Z6/7. If for any reason you want the old FTZ with the tripod mount, get one now, they won't be making them anymore.

I did ask about the wear on lenses when shooting at 120fps and he honestly didn't know. He assumed it would lock in the aperture, but said he would find out and email me once he could confirm.

Yes, thanks, this is reliable confirmation of what's also being demonstrated in the first promotional videos.
Countless forum posts later, this evidence is confirming what was clear to some of us long back, the AF speed of adapted F Nikkors is controlled primarily by the camera. The FTZ is only the electronic conduit, especially with the newer E lenses.
This admittedly early evidence further questions the argument that Nikon should convert older F lenses into Z mount. While some MILC only photographers may seek to avoid the extra bayonet mount, it's not necessary to speed up Autofocus.

More, direct feedback on the speed of adapted glass:

Another interesting video (unfortunately in Chinese) with real time usage of Z9, with buffer testing for all RAW options, focusing, video , and some comparation of quality of different RAW options

EDIT: he definitely was not using any of the faster QF cards, as far as I can see

With the high frame rate of the Z9 you'll be able to make up for lost time. If you're a little short on time, 30 fps will help you to catch up in no time. If you are really short of time, just use 120 fps. You'll be able to handle a month's worth of photos in a few hours. :)

That’s all great to hear! I think the button placement will take a little time to adjust to for me as well. I’d prefer to shoot cameras with identical button placement but two Z9 bodies is not going to work for me 😊. Did you have a chance to get any impressions on the EVF and AF performance? Thanks for sharing this info!

How do you figure that? B&H has them for $199.99 US = $247.85 CAN AND..... They don't appear to be available.

Ahh...., yes it is, which makes the price very competative. Good observation!!

However, the only shipping option they offer online is to Canada addresses.
Oops. Replied to your first post on this topic before reading on further.

EVF was fine, nice and bright. We talked about it being lower def and he said that they wanted to be the only true no-blackout camera on the market. With their faster processor and lowering the definition a bit, they accomplished that goal. While some competitors EVF won't go black, the refresh rate slows and you aren't seeing in real time. Z9 should be in real time all the time through the viewfinder.

With so few of us in a small room, not much to test AF wise. I tried to move it around quickly and it did grab the eye of a poster on the wall ;). I asked if you can prioritize the eye AF, but that's a no. You can choose one or multiple, default has all checked. It will generally choose person first unless that person is very small in the frame and another one of your options is closer.

Sounds like it will be great. Looking forward to getting one! Thanks for the info. I wont be able to try one first so appreciate you sharing your experience

I think a few of us are going to be at the Denver launch event tonight if anyone has any question they want answered. It will be a hands on event

I'd like to get your impression on the S100-400. The presentation will be live streamed if anyone wants to watch. They are also giving away swag and several Mike's gift certificates, good luck!

Got the first card, now I just need my Z9!
