Official Nikon Z9 Launch, Info, and Discussion Thread

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I wasn't interested in the usual stuff so it was just a cursory look at the topics and I was paying attention to only critical topics like this one, AF, buffer etc. One of the main things I wanted to check was on how to configure recall shooting functions (RSF) and there isn't much on that topic.

... pg:600...? It looks like you're in line for a Bachelor of Science degree when you finally finish the manual and master the camera! OTOH, I'll bet most never get that far into the paper manual, using the find/search function of the online manual instead.

I hope Nikon provides checklists for camera settings by subject somewhere in the manual.

I also searched for Recall Shooting Functions, but it's insufficient. I've pulled out a couple of long overdue fixes in the Custom Settings, where the Z9 makes possible Right Handed shooting.
So far only Brad Hill has reported anything about how to configure RSF... there's the thread of his testing, but I kept discussion of the e-manual in its dedicated thread...

Electronic manuals are invaluable to run Pdf searches, but manual can be highlighted, annotated and dog-eared etc
Index is pathetic, typically of Nikon. Eventually Thom H will get out his ebook. In the interim I think this forum is a suitable site to pool fixes and solutions, and perhaps to also coordinate feedback for Firmware fixes to Nikon.

Some early commentary from Thom:

Interesting:
I have said all along the Z9 will be slower or just behind the A1 and R3.

To me it makes more sense to be accurate rather than fast with misses.

First comes light then exposure then speed, then that's all blended with accurate focus be it auto or manual, that said you can do with variation of the for mentioned but if the focus is out the shot is in the bin, unless you have a new Google phone that makes out of focus images in focus and sharp............then you really know your obsolete .........

Time light and speed is all that matters, sharpness largely depends on you........story telling is the objective.....
Happy Days

Jarrod is very good and always has been, intelligent smart and knows how to work the system as a top rated blogger with sustainability, he is the current generation of adaptability vertically interrogated in the new digital world of media......that's all obvious.

The parasites like U Tube Google etc I tunes that simply take great chunks of revenue out of your earnings will always do so as well as control you...........
Jarrod is an excellent survivor and in his area and very successful.
In my mind comments on forms or segments are obsolete 24 hours later as its just old news.
People don't want to read anymore hence they gravitate to video.
Peoples memory on mass on the web generally is 24 hours if that.

As a reviewer he is not politically correct or sensitive certainly very entertaining and all that's earning him respect............

I watch all his new videos when they arrive from start to finish......that speaks volumes, he is short sharp to the point a modern day Ken Rockwell so to speak.

Its not the rich or large and powerful that always survives its the adaptable.........Jarrod fits the generation.

His product reviews are in practical simple terms in the field realistically spot on......

Steve in this BC is similar......... straight to the point, hands on, sharp fast accurate simple and practical, real world.......

I find Steve and Jarred are my two sources of quick fix, two different generations and styles that both work.

If its deeper then i chat with Thom............The rest are not necessary for me.

If you note Jarrod's alignment is with Sony by choice, its fair to assume why and it makes sense, Sony has taped into the younger generation by a long way including schools etc.
Jarrod's age and style fits with the younger generation............. clicks subscriptions Instagram Tick Tock U Tube is not where so may old wild life photogrpahers hang out......i would do the same thing that Jarrod is doing, he is smart and adpats..........and remains on point, Nikon is not the blazing future younger generation if you analyze the averag age of Nikon Owners..........

Yeah, but Steve is too good a photographer to get a fair idea of how good the camera is. I mean to say, he will make a good camera seem excellent with his skills & the amount of time he can spend doing such things. The reveiws are detailed though which is how I ended up on this forum.

Steve is brilliant technically and photographic wise no question

I have said all along the Z9 will be slower or just behind the A1 and R3.

The Z9 camera is actually focusing 120 times per second with any sensor in the frame and changing exposure settings at the same time. Subject acquisition and stickiness are settings you can control, and nobody I have heard of has had problems after optimizing those settings. That said - the photographer has to do their job and make adjustments and changes when their current mode is not optimal.

I'd wait for a serious evaluation before pronouncing one camera as better or worse at a particular task.

I have heard that the tracking lock on was in circumstances at full adjustment and wished it had more room to adjust like the Canon R3.

I think this is an area Nikon will need to bolster, i cant recall if it was Polans clip or DP review i think it was Polan.......
I think the Z9 will be fine and we will enjoy it.

I am about to collect my Z9 and adapter in 30 minutes this morning when the office doors are unlocked LOL.

I think the supply will be as i was informed originally in OZ a little surprising with more units available than first thought.
I feel et Z9 will be great, i mean come on its a D850 with a D6 twist how could it be a disaster.
Its like having a D850 with at 20 fps and vastly new generation focusing that alone is enough.

Very interesting!

Will you be doing an unboxing video after you receive your Z9?

IS the 2022 line up going to make the Z9 A1 R3 range somewhat out of date.....????

Is it true Sony is releasing their new sensor technology that will increase light gather capacity by two times, and is the start of a new industry treadmill journey........
Is this why Nikon had said at some time back that they were no longer prioritizing on high ISO...........i also heard that they were looking at this technology a long time ago that could allow their sensors to gather much more more light........!!!

The Google phone according to adds takes out of focus images and puts them in focus, isn't this like the new Topaz software ???? wow whats next..........

All getting a bit much............i think i will simply ignore the internet to recharge...............and stay with composition till its made obsolete...........

Merry Christmas and safe happy holidays..keep well keep safe and keep enjoying your photography........

Z9 is great but the 900+ page PDF manual is daunting.

Its getting a bit much isn't it, i ignore 90% of it as the principal of photography is the same...........
The world is now advertising/selling new play games on your dash screen or iPad or phone while your driving..........they call this progress...........
