OK, this may be the first Customer photo w/ the Z9. It's very dark and Very rainy in SoCal tonight, and I'm on crutches w/ a broken kneecap. Just charged the battery and hobbled to the Christmas tree, so no 40 fps or birds in flight. And zero look at settings or the 900 page manual, so give me a break on all things technical. Just wanted to say Nikon really came through w/ their promised delivery.

I had actually got some previous other shots I was extremely happy with but I had inadvertently set it to jpeg normal instead of RAW. I had set the camera to underexpose by a stop or so to preserve the highlights of the irredescent blue feathers of this Superb Fairywren due to it flitting in and out of the shade. I just hadn't realised I had set it to jpeg.
The Z9 tracked its eye brilliantly but unfortunately due to it being underexposed, it was difficult to get the result I was hopnig for. This is basically a boosted jpeg.

Superb Fairywren

Z9 + Z 100-400 f5.6 VRS, 1/200sec, f6.3, 400mm, ISO640 cropped about 50%.

Some early commentary from Thom:

Had a glance.

My observations.

1) Day 7 lions are not in focus as Thom claims! One can clearly see the tail of the lion on the left of the screen which is also the nearest, is sharper than the faces. Even the grass blades on the left are sharper than the face.

2) Z9 struggling to track a diving pied kingfisher with a busy background is disappointing. I have manual focussed the whole sequence on video with a Z6. It is not the hardest thing. Hope the production model is better. Having used the R6, I feel it could do a far better job.

3) What's up with Thom's pics. I am not familiar with his photography, but the bird photos looked below average. Pixelated. Way too cropped. A record shot at best.

4) Thom should have shared the exif details on the images. That would have helped more.

5) All the images...it seems like they are on shot on a Canon! I know there is no way to judge that correctly. But it gives me that Canon vibe. Dull photos lacking ISO invariance if that's a real thing!

The lorikeet looks amazing. The background is what makes it so good...

i meant like he says 70-200, but not which 70-200. " I hadn’t updated my FTZ firmware yet, so I started with the 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 2x teleconverter mounted to it on the Z9. ". i assumed he meant the "s" version, but it was a bit unclear. the next post he did say he used the "s" the previous day

Fantastic shots, Lance B! And beautiful subjects, too. I wasn't going to get the Z 100-400, but am now thinking that this thread is soon going to cost me even more money than it already has!

Z9 FAULT going back to Nikon demanding a full replacement or refund Not a repair.

Sitting at the table Chirstmas morning, all exited, unpacked the Z9, card door dose not open.

I either need a license to open it or a uni degree..........you simply move the button in the direction as outlined in the booklet , mate short of getting a screwdriver this thing dose not open..........is there a trick to it ???? please let me know and i will great full.

I will have Nikon collect it, issue a replacement or refund, i don't want the door fixed, it seems i have a 4 o'clock model.
Its disappointing as i have never had an issue with any single digital model.

My first D850 went in to Nikon twice in the first 6 weeks, they replaced it after that.

Why at the Z9 level do i have to ware QC issues and at that price................more things are made in China than we think.

Spent a few hours setting it up and fooling around with it. It's my first mirrorless from DSLR. Feels good, they really thought about this one and added lots of little conveniences. There are a few customization tweaks I'd like to see that I'm not finding, but no deal breakers for sure. Who knows what I haven't found yet anyway. Again, feels really good - as good as the D6 only a little smaller.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. It was weird opening the first time for me if that means anything. With your thumb, pull the lock button down, then while the button is down pull the door back toward you. If that doesn't work, then yeah - sounds like something is off.

Hi O, Use your 2 index fingers, 1 to push the slider down, the other to push the door towards the back of the camera.
It is a little tricky. My first thoughts of the camera, Amazing !!

I just looked at the manual, and the diagram is a bit misleading. You do not swing the door open. You pull it back toward you and it springs out in the direction of the diagram. Do not try to swing it open. Pull it back toward you and let go. Like the D850 if I remember right, but with a lock.

Thank you its finally opened, it was incredibly stiff or tight, needed real force till it opened, the more i do it the more it has freed up.

Thank you so much
