Thinking Zf vs Z8 for backup cam....

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Just over cdn$1,700 before any add ons (e.g. any insurance if not built into that price, tax, etc.) for two weeks. I keep saying that it's close to the cost of the Zf which an accountant would (my suggestion of the similarity in price) cry over :) but it's close enough when we're talking 'insurance' spend (e.g. I get nothing out of the rental gear and I'm not making revenue on the trip) that they merge in my head :) Cheers!

Seems like 1700 cdn would be a nice "coupon" for any new camera purchase.

In addition to the $2K for the camera there is the cost for buying high capacity SDXC cards and multiple EN-EL18c batteries. The Z7 II for $500 more will allow you to use the CFexpress cards you now use with the Z9.

I find it very useful with two cameras to have a long prime on one and zoom on the other. The 600mm along with the 100-400mm would be a good combination.

Thanks. As my current zoom is the hefty 180-400 (which I'm trying to avoid taking especially since there will be little chance of actually needing anything but the long lens -- small chance of seeing much of anything alive other than the polar bears as we'll be almost exclusively out on the ice) I'm thinking the z70-200 (with a tc) for my zoom. But again I'm told it'll likely stay in the bag unless I want to take candids of camp and people, etc. The second camera (whatever I take) I'll have the z14-24 attached (another reason I don't want to/can't use the D6) for landscape and ice-scape work. Tho quite likely when it comes to landscape work I'll almost certainly use the Z9 as well, making the 'second' camera, again, purely insurance against Z9 failure. Which then brings me to what do I have after the trip with the backup cam -- and for that I'd like to stay on the front edge of the latest AF capabilities, at least. Cheers!

Oh. Blame Canada. Wish you were closer, I'd let you use one of mine.
Ha! Yah, retail sucks here, comparatively. Thanks for the lend offer; a friend who is joining me on the trip got a Z8 for Christmas -- I've got to convince her that if my Z9 fails her camera becomes mine for the trip (since she originally singed up for the trip with no real intent to take photos; but of course now that she's got the gear.... :) ).

I’ve made the mistake of looking more into the Zf this week, partially because of this thread, and now want one even more. I think it would be the perfect non wildlife travel camera for me. It would also be able to serve as an excellent backup to a Z8/Z9 if required though lacking ergonomically. I really like the retro design and enjoyed using my Fujifilm cameras. I don’t need it though and trying to figure out where I’d fit it in. 😊

Exactly! :) I've still not made my decision about the trip 'insurance' camera, but have definitely moved firmly into the I 'want' a Zf regardless :) As for fit in -- good question!! -- I've in the past carried the D3 and D6, and then the Z9 and the D6 for walk about street photography (so have a prime and a zoom handy), so having the comparatively weightless Zf on my hip with the Z9 in my hand... The arguments in favour of 'want' are stacking up :) Cheers!

If you want one regardless…then the trip insurance camera problem is solved it seems…the FPS and MP aren’t up to what the Z9 has of course but they’re good enough for the backup body I would guess…and if they’re not then rent/borrow another Z9 or Z8 is the only way to get those features. And depending on what (if anything) the Z6III or Z7III become…the Zf is a nice smaller walking around and travel body…although TBH the retro design and non conformity with other body muscle memory would likely keep me from getting one as the more limited AF in the Z7II I have isn’t really limiting for the times when it’s the right body to carry.

Yah, I'm just waiting as long as possible 'cause I don't want to spend the $ (for a want vs a need) :)

RENT................ this will give you time and some experience of what you are interested in.
Too expensive (renting) and I'm not interested in the camera, I need a 'got nothing else' insurance camera in the case of primary cam failure. Then 'want' gets in the way if I"m faced with a purchase decision for the back up :)
