This second one is a farmstead that is viewable from a rest stop on Interstate 70. To see it you have to walk just a short distance behind the facilities, so I suppose most people never get to see it, but it was a nice setting. I guess also you have to be in the west bound lanes.

The photo of the Windmill and the Wind Turbine could be titled Past and Present. Nice composition, very nice photo.

Just to the southwest of our county (Shawnee), is Wabaunsee County. Many many structures in that area were built from the native limestone found in the area. Additionally there are many arched cellars in the area, On a tour of the cellars, we found these structures. If any of my cellar pictures had came out I would have included those, but live & learn, which I'm trying to continue to do both!

The first one is a home in the area, owned by a couple from Kansas City originally, that are extremely active helping to restore these old homesteads & providing educational forums to teach the history of the area. Many of these structures were built in the late 1800's as this area was being settled.

This last one is interesting (at least to me) as the structure is called the Fort, even on "Old Fort Road". It is rumored that it was built as a precaution against feared attacks from local Native Americans. The exact history of the structure apparently isn't really known, at least by the group sponsoring the tour or by others in the area. While it might have indeed been built for defense, there is no known record of any hostilities in this area of Kansas. But it's a cool old building. Notice the gun slits built into the upper wall. At least that's the assumption. You guys tell me?

I think North Dakota would seem that way, but other days maybe not so much. The farmsteads are certainly spread out. Saw lots of actually well maintained old structures throughout North Dakota. Dry climate I’m sure helps that. One of the unique things we noticed, like in the example above, many if not most of the old structures had no junk hanging around them. No weed & tree over growth, which again might be the result of dry conditions, but old washing machines & implements not pick themselves up & move. I found it quite interesting & I think a compliment to those hardworking folks.

Getting out again yesterday. This first set is a Doctor’s homestead in east-central Kansas. In it’s day, it must have been quite the place. Notice the scroll work above the windows & apparently in those days rather than hanging a shingle you engraved your name & occupation above the door. Or perhaps for the mailman! In an earlier visit, we had tried to locate this property, but had bad coordinates, but it was worth a bit more research & the revisit to find it. This particular area, while in my opinion is just a beautiful landscape by itself, seems to be just full of structures such as this. Definitely plan some additional time driving the area. Thanks for viewing.

Approximately 10 miles the road from the previous post, just off the edge of a small town I came across a grain elevator that I had seen several years ago as I was just getting into Astro photography & thought/wondered if it would make a good foreground for a Milky Way capture or just a star filled night sky, but was unsure with the town right across the road from it. Compounding the issuer, I didn’t record the location, well I did, but not formally, thinking I would remember it, I have spent several other trips in the area where I thought it was to no avail & then when I wasn’t looking for it, I found it! Additionally when going over to it for further inspection I discovered a windmill just to the north of the elevator which might just line up well for a Milky Way composition, but certainly works for starry sky. It’s fun just to go out & come across there finds!

The two day shots were taken in north central Kansas, maybe two miles apart, just in the last couple of weeks. The Milky Way & farmstead is from more central Kansas, taken in August of last year. From that outing we made the decision to buy bug nets to over our heads. The bugs that night were as bad as I was ever exposed to! But what a night.

Here's a Church in a small unincorporated area very close to where the first two windmill pictures were taken. As I was taking pictures of the exterior, a gentleman drove by, stopped and told me I could go inside & take pictures if I wanted. He said he was on the Church Counsel and said I looked OK to be trusted! Imagine that! It was beautiful. I told my wife who was in the car waiting for me (she recently broke a bone in her foot, so while she still goes with me on adventures, right now she isn't carrying any of my equipment :D, I hadn't been inside a Catholic Church in I don't know how many years & had forgotten how ornate they were. It was cool. But the Church (the one pictured) was built in 1908, replacing the original wood structure which was built in 1881. You can't make this stuff up, history is do cool.
