z 180-600mm backlog: how can a non nps photographer get one today?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Let me know if the image is too macho and I can change it.
Look like a wimp to me, he may not be able to handle this 180-600 :)

I ordered directly with NIKON (USA) after waiting 3 months from B-H. Nikon billed my credit card the nest day, shipped the following day. If you don't live here in the states, place order at your (friends) Nikon location, skip the dealers.

Good plan, but Nikon comes with sales tax which for some is 8-10% premium.

Thanks everyone. I was asking these questions for a friend. I have passed all your responses on to him.

By the way, since I think this is my 100th post I thought I would explain my avatar image.

The photo in the image is not me, it is a photo of a famous opera singer, Bryn Terfel. He performed the role of Wotan in Wagner's Ring for Metropolitan Opera.

I happen to love Wagner and he is one of my favorite singers. I thought the image was appropriate for a wildlife photography forum because of the ravens.

Let me know if the image is too macho and I can change it.
……………& there’s me thinking we had Bryn Terfel in the forum!!…damn! 🫣🫣

Hello from Pretoria, South Africa, I got on a waiting list at a leading camera store and was told it would take about a month for the next shipment to arrive and they were only allocated 12 units..
I went to the store for something else, and casually asked if they have one in stock, and voila...they did, so I bought it on the spot. I shoot motorsport...

I ordered mine (non-nps) on June 21st mid day from B&H specifically for the PayBoo Tax refund. It was delivered on October 25th. No tax, free shipping. Can't beat that if you can wait.

It's a long awaited lens that delivers a very useful focal length range at an unexpectedly low price. The demand has been very high for this lens, I expect that has more to do with short stock than any last minute changes to manufacturing or QC procedures.

Just comparing its price to something like the 600mm PF is enough to explain why the latter has been much easier to find on the shelf.
Global demand is high, including Japan as judged by MAP Camera: " ....Nikon Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens rounding out the top three... "

As at 17th Dec the Photosynthesis site was aware of about 18,000 180-600 and about 19,000 100-400.

The 100-400 has been on sale about 3 times longer than the 180-600 - implying the rate of 180-600 production is about 3 times greater than for the 100-400.

By having a good relationship with a smaller Nikon UK specialist retailer - with the smallest photo shop floor space in the UK :) - I got a first UK batch 180-600 on the 31st August last year.

Well, order through Hunts. No sales tax, free shipping, and 3% back on my card….

I have bought many hard to find Nikon items at Best Buy, but there is a trick. Go on their website in the early morning hours after midnight. That's when they post in-stock items for sale. Early bird catches the worm. It works!
Thats how I landed my 600f4E when they were backordered for like 6 months. No one ever thinks to check bestbuy for the big ticket items!

There is a lot of discussion about the Z 180-600mm.

Some people are obviously getting theirs.

I tried to order one last summer. I eventually gave up and moved on.

When I cancelled my order my friend the same day placed his order with B & H. As of this point he still hasn't gotten his lens and no one has any idea when it will become available. I think he ordered it last Sepltember.

So, my question for discussion is how are people getting their lens and how long will it be before the rest of us can get it?
When I first heard of this lens, I got on the list at a Tempe, AZ camera store. I don't remember when that was, but it was right after the lens was officially announced. I waited months with no word about when it would be available. When I asked, they said they had only received a couple for NPS members, and then someone on a Facebook group (I think it was) said that he had ordered a lens from a store in California which notified him that it had two, but he had already found one elsewhere. I went online to the store and ordered one which I received three days later. On the same afternoon of the day I made the purchase, Tempe Camera sent me an email saying they had the lens and I was next on the list. I told them to move to the next one. I guess you just have to persevere....

I did what has been suggested. I downloaded the Nikon authorized dealer list and started contacting them according to distance from me. The third call I found a small dealer with one on the shelf. They shipped it to me the next day and I had it in my hands three days after the phone call. LOVE it!

My answer to your question is: with patience.

I am not "NPS." I ordered my Z8, with accessories, in early July. (This included an FTZ II adapter.) I also placed my pre-order for the 180-600mm lens then, too. In the interim I used my 500mm PF lens with the FTZ II adapter so I could start using my new Z8. Even though I did get antsy from time to time, I just tried to put the 180-600mm lens out of my mind. It'll get here when it gets here.

Much to my surprise, after a 5-month and 1-week wait, in mid-December, I got an e-mail from B&H that the lens was being sent to me with next day shipping! Although I got the lens, the weather here was either rain or no birds for days. So even though I had the lens, I still had to wait to really use it. Patience was very good to have in my tool kit!

Over time, I tried to treat the wait for this lens like I would sending in a Publisher's Clearing House (PCH) sweepstakes entry. Send in the entry, then forget about it and get on with my life. The only difference with the lens is, at least I KNOW, I will definitely get my lens, and sooner than a sweepstakes prize. ;)

I pre-ordered and finally received it in December.

I get stuff from a fairly small brick and mortar store in CA and do not pay sales tax so I get my credit card cash back and not sales tax beats Payboo

neither have my purchases from Nikon USA included sales tax .. maybe it is state specific
In many cases, stores will be required to charge tax to customers who are ordering from the state the online business is based out of, but are not required to collect out-of-state taxes... There's always been a "how much $ did you spend on online orders from out of state sellers" on annual tax filings, but I don't know how many people are truthful on that line item.

One part of that is that in some cases they are if they have a physical "presence" in the state they are shipping to or have an agreement between states. Amazon the fastest one that comes to mind. Nikon has no physical presence in Idaho and no agreement with Idaho so no sales tax.
