Big Prime - Camera Bags & Backpacks

starting to pack for my first wildlife centric trip this year, 10 days out in Yellowstone/Tetons.

the Nya XL ICU will fit 2x Z9 + 300GM + 600TC pretty comfortably. could probably also pack one or more smaller lenses (24-120, 35-150, etc.) in there as well.

now I just have to decide if I want that combo, or to swap the 300GM for the 35-150 + 100-400.

Is there much wiggle room at the top where the Z9 is attached to the 600 TC, or is it a very tight fit? Thanks. And have a great trip!

in my opinion - there's a good amount of room. significantly more room than in the Boris IV for example which is a crazy tight fit for the same setup.

if you look closely at the bottom of the pack, you'll see I have an "extra" divider that is essentially doing nothing but adding padding. this was because I didn't see it at first until my girlfriend pointed it out lol. so if you remove that, you'll have even more room

it's hard to tell, but the setup isn't flush to the top with the ICU. the ICU looks like it has some play in it, so you could probably push it out a little bit if you had a longer combo (R5 + RF 600 f4?) or something. I suspect it might even be able to fit Z9 + 600TC + 1.4x TC or 2x TC attached.

Perfect thanks very much, just received my copy of the 600TC, but only have a Z6 for the time being, so this looks spot on!

just returned from my 2 ish week trip to the Tetons/Yellowstone, flying via Southwest

The Nya Evo 60L + XL ICU came in clutch. it's extremely comfortable to carry, easy to access the gear, and overall just a joy. probably the best backpack experience I've ever had

I can't say enough good stuff about it, and think it's as close to perfect as you could go for a big prime bag

Good to know. Waiting to see if there will be a Black Friday sale on them.

I really want one would probably be perfect but after exchange and duty taxes would almost be 1100$ for a pack, tough pill to swallow haha

Hmm I just returned my the exact setup I wanted to use it with my Z9 with a Nikon Z600/4TC lens attached using Zemlin hood/cap combo
Yes I did fit though when you have the XL ICU installed It was impossible to access it from the back
It could only be accessed from the top

That's somewhat expected when carrying the 600 TC with the camera body attached. I think NYA-EVO even illustrate this in their promotional videos. This camera/lens combo extends nearly all the way to the top of the XL RCI, which means that it's well above the top of the zippered opening that provides access to the interior of the backpack/RCI.

Fortunately NYA-EVO provides a zippered access point at the top of their RCI, which allows you to access/remove gear that extends into the upper portion of the RCI (through the top of the Fjord 60-C). This design seems to work well, and allows the XL RCI to be used in the Fjord 60-C without having to make any modifications to the original design.

I find that this access method works just fine with either my Z8 or Z9 mounted to the 600 TC with Zemlin hood. I've also tested it with the OEM hood as well, but I usually use the Zemlin hoods when traveling with this backpack. (y)

this is strange to me, because I exclusively accessed mine from the back for the entire trip. can you explain more about what issue you had that prevented you from accessing it?

edit: here's a video I made showing how I use it, and how easy it is

Yeah here in Michigan we have crappy gloomy weather most of the year, so instead of shooting I just collect lenses.

Only got into photography 3 years ago, but I've owned every mirrorless tele from all 3 big brands (Sony, Nikon, Canon).

The gear is becoming more of a hobby than the shooting itself. 🤣

do you have pics of your MS36L and what you described? the MS36L easily fits the 186, 800PF, and 2x attached Z9s so I'm not sure how yours "could barely accommodate" a slightly smaller setup lol

for smaller lenses (70-200, 100-400, wide angles) I usually just bring them in my "personal item" which is a Fjallraven computer bag thingy. I figure I could probably fit both Z9 bodies in there too if needed.

Ditto in Ann Arbor.

Soon I head back to South Africa & Tanzania. Decided to use my old trusted mr JanGear Boris III. Already packed the backpack this afternoon and inside is:
- Nikon Z7
- Nikon Z8
- Nikon Z9
- Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S
- Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5/6 VR S
- Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S
- 2x Nikon EN-EL15c
- 1x Nikon EN-EL18d
- Nikon charger MH-33
- Nikon charger MH-34
- 2x CFExpress B memory card
- Assortment of various USB cables
- 1x Samsung USB charger
- 1x travel adaptor UK
- 1x travel adaptor South Africa
- 2x Samsung SSD
- 2x Li-Ion 18650 battery

I struggle to get all this stuff in my NYA-EVO Fjord 60L in a secure manner but will get this backpack when I go in January to the Canadian freezer in search for the snowy owls, something very difficult to find in Southern & Eastern Africa :p .

So here is my NYA-EVO 60C with XL ICU
OK so I finally figured out how to get my Z9 with my Z600/4 TC lens attached. Seems to work well. No way to have a second Z9 with a lens attached though a little bit to small for that. What I found most interesting was a I cannot fit a Canon R5ll with the Canon RF 600/4 lens attached. Its just to long for the ICU. I don't know why I thought the RF600/4 was shorter then the Nikon Z600/4TC I guess its not

you can certainly fit two Z9s with lenses in the bag. I can do it with the Z9 + 300GM and Z9 + 600TC

I'm not sure about the RF 600, but I wouldn't be surprised. that lens is a joke and unnecessarily long

enjoy your trip Vince!

I think for long lenses, the two best bags are the MrJanGear Boris and the Nya Evo 60L, depending on need. The Boris is bigger and can fit much more gear, but not nearly as comfortable. Nya Evo has better chances of fitting airline requirements, plus it has the benefit of an ICU - and is far more comfortable to actually hike with or wear.

honorable mention to the Gura Gear bags, which are similar to the Boris bag but with one major flaw - they open backwards. meaning the part that goes against your back has to be placed down into the dirt/water/mud/etc. in order to access gear

The Canon 600 is the longest of them all, especially the RF as it has the built in EF-RF adapter as part of the lazy lens design. I think the Nikon is actually slightly shorter than the Sony despite having the built-in TC which is remarkable.

Hold on are saying you can fit both a Z9 with the Z600/4TC and a second Z9 with a lens attached ?
I saw the video where you show 2 Z9s yet only one has a lens attached

I’m trying out this winter a new R5ll with battery Grip and a RF 600/4 simply because it is a lighter setup
Less I have to cary on Alpine Downhill ski courses and oh yeah 30fps RAW with recapture. Z9 will not do this until the next Z9s or whatever Nikon calls it

According to B&H
Canon RF 600 /4
6.6 x 18.6" / 168 x 472 mm

Nikon Z600/4TC
6.5 x 17.2" / 165 x 437 mm

So yes the Nikon is shorter yet heavier 7.2 pounds compared to 6.8 pounds for the Canon

yes that is correct. I usually travel with either both bodies disconnected, or with one body disconnected and one attached (for ease of immediate shooting), but I can keep both bodies attached if I want.

I just don't like putting extra stress on the mounts. the only reason I had my Z9 + 600TC attached in that video was because I had been out shooting with it earlier in the day.

Hmm I will have to do some more fittings
When I shoot the 600 I always leave it attached to my Z9 but never store it in the back pack with the Z9 on the bottom that would for sure be to much stress on the mount

For those who have the Nya-Evo 60C with the Nya-Evo XL ICU can you measure for me what you feel is the maximum length of gear you can fit. I'm okay if there is some stress on the top of the ICU as long as you can close the bag.
I'm trying to figure out if I can fit my A1 with 600GM and my super-short hood in the shooting position. FWIW, the length of that combo is 21 3/4" or 55cm.
Thanks

I would say it's slightly over 21" to the top of the insert. However, you might be able to squeeze in a bit more if you overpack it and are ok with some bulging at the top.
