Have you used the z 135mm f1.8 Plena? What do you think of it?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The photos above show exactly the kind of thing I have been attempting to accomplish. I really like being able to focus in on a subject and detune everything around so it fades into the background.

This lens seems to be the master of bokeh. I am really looking forward to exploring what it can do.

Beautiful creative potential here.
:) right distance you can do that with your Z800 f/6.3 ;)

Great shots Luke. I too love my Plena and this post is making me want to use it more. Very special lens. I'm strongly considering trying to fit it in my bag when go to the Galapagos Islands. I really believe I could get some creative shots on the islands.

Looks like a winner. Good info in the PL article. . With 11 blades it should be more round than other lenses, but can only be fully round wide open, no? They only posted outdoor wide open shots, probably so only round bokeh would show. They said they focused on vignetting, so less cats-eye for bokeh near the corners, looks great in the sample photos.

Being realistic, even the best lens isn't a magic bokeh machine, they still knew how to set up the shot to maximize it.

My zynic answer: get insurance and don't tip. Out of curiosity, what kayak do you have and how do you want to use it? Because even a sea kayak in calm waters should be good, as would be the white water ones, again in calm water.

It is arriving tomorrow. I already know I am going to shoot like the 800; wide open with various af options look to dx or crop for reach. It is all a matter of a creative eye.

I am wondering whether to add the Z 135mm Plena to the inventory.

In addition to wildlife photography I am into landscape and general nature photography.

I don’t have an interest in portrait photography.

Based on reviews I have seen I am attracted by the creative potential this lens may bring,
The Planar is a fantastic lens but its not for everyone.
for outdoor portraits its unbeatable.
but in the studio i normally shoot portraits at f5.6 or above... 🦘

The PLENA arrived and I had a short time to shoot a few images from the garden.

My initial reaction is the depth of field on this lens at 1.8 is extremely shallow and I may have to stop down a bit at times to get enough depth for my main subject.

The other reaction is this thing does a wonderful job on backgrounds and that is the easy part.

Anyway one picture posted below I have a couple others that are better but I have a meeting coming up in an hour so will probably do some more posting tomorrow.

That's a great start with the Plena. Lovely shot!

Congratulations on your new lens. The second series of photos looks fine, but this image with the flower has some odd movement/reflection(?) just above the flower that seems unusual. I am not sure if that is something in the background heavily blurred or something else, but it did catch my attention.

I saw it too. Is it water?

Put these on a 5k screen and blow them up and the detail is much more impressive on the original RAW than you see with these JPEGs

Everyone thanks for putting me at jeopardy with She Who Must Be Obeyed.

This is a tempting and dangerous place.:):):):):)
“She Who Must Be Obeyed” is known as the “War Department” in my house….. and yes, this site can be the “candy store” when exciting new equipment is available.🤩

I bought this lens when I visited Australia in May. I absolutely love it. It is not the sort of lens I would normally purchase but it was on offer and with the tax free deal, it was a bargain.
Whenever I use this lens, it makes me think differently, because of its capabilities. This is good for me, as it pushes me to try different things. I mostly use it for relatively close wildlife, plants, butterflies, dragonflies, etc.

Before I told my wife of many years why I need to sell another lens and get a 135 mm Plena I went out early this morning well before sunrise, smoky from wildfires and hot here, looking for owls with my Z6III and Tamron Z mount 35-150 f/2-2.8. No owls to be found so I shot some test shots at 94mm, 150mm and 133mm (my bad I was going for 135mm). Just for fun here are some jpgs exported from NX Studio no edits and then imported to LRC and then no edits just exported with the Backcountry Gallery preset for size. 135mm is not a focal length I use much mostly for people for my church gig indoors and outdoors so will have to think about this Plena temptation for a while.
