At Chaparral Lake in Scottsdale are a pair of mating Eagles, called Misty and Bandit, and lately people think one of Misty's offspring has returned and is stealing her fish from her. Well we didn't find them; but I did do these and wow the resolving power of this lens and its weight amazes me. I have never owned a PF lens. This thing rocks.

Wow! Between Barking Beans and sinewsworn, I am impressed with their amazing images. Will be looking for whatever birds are left around here in Wisconsin to create images with the inspiration this thread provides!
Juncos, woodpeckers, chickadees, sparrows, finch and cardinals. Slim pickings this time of year, I’m afraid. 3.5 months until we start seeing some variety.

I continue to get great shots with the 600pf. Here are a few shots from the last 4 to 5 days.

Chappy, these are stunningly beautiful! I especially like the first two of the hawk - very striking, and the composition in the second is superb. (beak curving down right next to leaves curving down...and awesome colors). Well done!
Thank you. While lens works well at distance the best shots are still the best when you can get between 30 ft and 50 feet of the subject. Colors just seem to really pop.

What to do................ I have a Z9 & Z8 and Im looking to purchase the 600PF but I have the 180-600 6.3 and the Nikon 600mm F4 FL which takes awesome pictures but Im thinking about getting the 600PF. Just looking for the pros & cons on this lens and has anyone else been in this situation?

Thanks

I have the Z180-600 f6.3, the Z600 f6.3, and the Z800 pf. I sold the F-mount 600 f4.0 e fl. While the Z lenses are great, the do not have the low light ability that the F-mount 600 f4.0 has. The f-mount 600 f4.0 is significantly heavier than the Z600 f6.3. There are times when I wish I still has the F-mount 600e f4.0, particularly early in the morning just as the sun rises, overcast days, and just as the sun sets. However when I think of carrying the F-mount 600, I am glad I have the weight savings of the z600.

I hope this helps.

Bill

Beautiful images! I just arrived in Florida for the first session with my Z8 and the 600mm PF. Here is my first bird portrait of a cooperative Tricolored Heron. This lens is razor sharp with beautiful detail and contrast.

In between snow storms (13" yesterday, 4" last night, another 8-14" predicted tonight), the sun appeared and I decided to venture out for mental health reasons :sneaky: Dead of winter, not much going on aside from the typical feeder birds, and of those, the Dark Eyed Juncos continue to be my ride-or-die winter companions.

This 600PF continues to impress, the shots captured with it are so crisp, clean, and full of detail, almost 3D in nature.

Nice images Matthew!

The Nikon 600PF is looking good.
I have three birding trips planned for this year, sort of catching up on the missed trips during corona...
On the first two, to small islands in Europe, the 600GM will go along without question. But the third trip to Costa Rica in november is a different story. At the switch from the rainy season to the dry season in a small group with guide and with many ventures through rainforest and over water. I got a Mindshift firstlight 30L to júst fit the Sony 600GM, and be allowed to carry on during the flight, but it quickly dawned on me that however great it would be to take the lens along, it just isn't going to be practical, and it would kill the holiday atmosphere as well (my spouse is coming along).
So I run into the limitations of a big 600/4 prime after all, and find myself with the quest for an addition, nót a change or system switch like in the past. I will hang on to the Sony 600GM for as long as I can shoot it handheld.
Due to the positive experiences with the Nikon 500PF, the new 600PF is an obvious choice, even though I would have preferred it slightly heavier, with larger front and f5.6, ánd fit on my A1.
But the small size and weight combined with the prime quality, and coupled with the Z8, would be a huge plus on the Costa Rica trip.

The only other serious option I can see, is the new Sony 300GM with both converters, giving me the versatilty of an added 300/2.8 and 420/4 lens for the hummingbirds in low light, but no doubt sacrificing on the 600mm end. I really hope Steve will be tempted by the Sony 300GM, and that he will do a comparison between the two. The options are very similar in size and weight. Common sense though tells me that adding a 2xTC is a precarious endeavour and will harm the bokeh and the 3D effect. I used the Canon 400DOII strictly with converters and it drove me to the 500PF. Especially a 2xTC really compresses the images, taking all spacious atmosphere away.

Beautiful clarity Michael, amazing!

Beautiful!
Tell the bird to take off it’s feet from the snow, it’s cold!

Question, Reason for EC + 1?
(exposure compensation)
For white and snow, shouldn’t it be negative EC?
Thank you, Joel; the Juncos regularly sit on one foot so as to warm the other up. Their hot little circulation system keeps their tiny feet from freezing though.

You’re correct in that the snow requires some EC; it's counter intuitive because the camera will try to make bright snow 18% gray, and will bring down ISO (I shoot w/ auto-ISO) to compensate. So, you have to dial in + EC to get the bright whites back, and ensure you don’t crush your shadows.

Here’s the view of my backyard this morning where I got the Junco shots:

We're getting a full inch on Sunday, a major weather event in N. Texas.

Hope you all are hanging in there! It's snowing like crazy here as I type this, another 12" expected. Good times :D
Hang in there, Matthew. We've got a bit of sun today (my body's gone into shock!) We're supposed to get rain after 4pm EST. No accumulated snow (knock on wood.)

Next week is frigid temp for us. Husband and I have been sick the last couple weeks in any case so we've not been out anywhere.

18 inches over the next 36 hours for us here in MKE area, on top of 5 yesterday and 4 the day before.

The cat is getting tired of my taking photos of it, but there's not much else to photograph these days...
We're getting it good, aren't we?! It was rather balmy and mild here up until Christmas, and then someone threw the winter switch to "Max".
