Welcome to another episode of "trying to make ordinary subjects look somewhat interesting".

Some lovely sunrise light was illuminating this black-headed gull colony. If like here, some of the birds decided to cooperate; it can turn into quite the fun/productive session.

LOL he's calling BS on you - not sure if it is because he think's he's extraordinary, or that you had to try so hard. Loved these.

I just posted this image taken with the 600PF with 1.4 TC. I was astounded at the detail in this one with that combo. Bright mid day so good light at 9:52am.

Here is an aviation photo, demonstrating the sharpness and handling of reflected sunlight.

Full picture is crop to 7401x4934 from the original Z9 raw. ISO 72, 1/640s F6.3. Exported to 1600 px (long edge) JPG
100% crop has same output resolution 1600 px long edge.
If you want to see any particular detail, let me know.

Needing to re-send my 600PF back to Nikon, as there's still a little grittiness under the focus ring from my Ft. DeSoto trip last month. They had it for almost 4 weeks last month, so hopefully this re-check is much quicker. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering: $770. That's how much it cost for a non-NPS Nikon Repair to fix "sand under the focus ring" 🤮 They had to replace the piece that has the serial number on it, so my lens has a new serial now; they even transferred over the AlphaGvrd skin piece from the old, to the new so that was nice of them.

Anyway, I took it out one last time before sending it in. A Yellow Warbler and an Eastern Kingbird:

Gorgeous photos! From Wyalusing, or Florida? Or your backyard?

Yipes, that was a costly repair. I had a silent wave motor fail on a 500mm f/4 E-series F mount lens, and it cost $621 (plus my ship to Nikon). Must have been an easier repair than your 600's sand under the focus ring, or perhaps the Z lens is more labor to repair? Either way, not cheap! Look forward to it being back in your highly capable hands!

Thank you! Taken at a local stream a couple miles from my place. Until the 600 comes back, I’ll be sporting the 400 4.5 + 1.4.

Yummy treat almost in beak...nice!
Now, about that sand. These are supposed to be weather sealed which I would think should seal out incidental sand. I trust you weren't building sand castles around the lens but I'd like to understand a bit more about how you think sand got in there so I (we) don't repeat your experience....

I had been laying on my belly, and at no point did my lens touch the sand. When I’d get up, I’d carefully brush the sand off, and ensure nothing was on my hands before touching the camera again. At some point, I must have missed a little bit along my leg, and I let the camera hang down by the sling, brought it back up and saw some sand sticking to the ring and a little on the skin. Brushed it off, didn’t think anything of it until I went to adjust focus, and > crackling grind < 😖

Can’t recommend a lens cover enough if shooting anywhere near sand. This has been damn annoying.

Arrgh....
Thanks for the explanation and recommendation. I'm a bit disappointed the lens was damaged like this, it hardy seems robust.
I will be darn careful around sand.....:cautious:

Here's a few shots from a recent trip to Maine. Enjoy the lighness of this lens for handheld action when there is plenty of light.

Well I wasn't going to buy this lens. But the discounts this month plus funds I've accumulated from selling used kit brought the out of pocket cost down to a reasonable figure. So I gave in  . Next morning a moose showed up in the yard to give me something to christen the lens. So here's my first image with the 600 6.3. Barely fit it in the frame. Never seen one with freckles on its nose like this.

What’s your opinion on this lens?
