Fall migration is about at its end. We still have some Yellow-rumped Warblers hanging around (tons of them this fall), but sadly I saw my first Dark-eyed Junco the other day, the harbingers of cold weather and desolation 😖 Some of you all love winter and choose to look at the positives, but personally.. ugh, I just can't. For me, time to set my alarm for mid-April when the first Spring migrants return and that excitement for May begins to build.

My first decent look at a duck this year, a Wood Duck. I rarely get to see ducks, let alone from a spot where I can get a decent photo of them.

Winter photography can be fun too, just have to get out and brave the cold 🥶. I'll be scouting for a pair of Snowy Owls that have returned consistently every year starting November. I'm looking forward to it

I've tried to be as up beat and positive about winter as I can possibly be, but each year it gets progressively more difficult to cope with. I miss the sorta-winters we had in Maryland/Virginia, at least there we had more species stay and it wasn't so dead... I think after the hurricane devastation, Florida may be off our list of places to move, and a long shot we may consider returning to the Virginia/Carolinas (they're still prone to hurricanes, but nowhere near as bad as FL).

Anyhow, here's a few more recents from me and the 600PF, an Eastern Meadowlark and a male Black-throated Green Warbler in drab winter plumage.

Just came back from an African safari in Maasai Mara. I had sold my Sony 400 GM and replaced it by the 300 GM and bought the 600 PF with a Z8. What a lens! I could not really find and differences between the 600 PF and my Sony 300 GM with 2xTC. And I did not want to fiddle around with TCs in the African Savannah.

i bought the lens after renting one at my local shop and getting incredible results. Better than the 180-600 for sure. Purchased it brand new on sale and 0 percent for 2years. I was excited to take it to a 2 day expedition to cape may NJ. unfortunately all my images are soft And didn’t bring a backup. So sending it in for repair. looks like a bad copy or out of alignment. Does anyone have experience with a repair or does it need to be replaced for a good copy.

I got the 600pf about 6 weeks ago. Just realized this thread was available to share.

I couldn't get my 600PF to focus with my Z6iii until I reset the camera. Now it's fine.-no blurry pics. You might want to save your settings to a card, then reset the camera to see if that works before sending off the lens. Just a thought.

In case anyone was curious, I got a ThinkTank Backlight Sprint 15L to try out and see if it fits the Z8 + 600PF. The results are in, and… with the hood in shooting position, the top part of the bag slopes juuuuust enough to push the camera up/back to where it distorts the rim of the compartment and the closed lid contacts the eye cup/viewfinder. It’s so dang close to fitting, like another centimeter and it’d be good, but unfortunately I think this one is a pass if you’re looking to have the rig in shooting-ready.

Now, reverse the hood, and it fits no problem. If you’re cool with that, if you’re using a slightly shorter lens OR a smaller (as in height) camera like a Z6III,this bag is amazingly minimalist, much more compact and svelte than my Backlight 26L. Unlike the 26L though, you won’t be fitting another side-kick lens alongside (my 400 4.5 won’t fit, nor would a 100-400), so this bag is perfect for a 1-lens setup. Stick with the Backlight 26L if you want more space.

Nice! You used a much higher shutter speed than I did-looks sharper. Also, a different part of the world, according to the angle. Fun stuff.
Thanks for the comment, CJ. I did use my tripod for the image. Initially, I wanted to do the long exposure experiment to capture more details. However, the super full moon was so bright there was no way to shoot without blowing out. Thus high ss and low iso as the final resort. I always shoot moon handhold before. This one is interesting.

We're back in Maryland for a couple of weeks, visiting in-laws, and it gives me a chance to spend some time with birds we don't get to see in Wisconsin too often, which used to be my regular customers when I used to live out here. My #1 favorite bird: the Hermit Thrush. One gets spotted every now and then in Wi, but out here, they're everywhere (even in the winter!) and I absolutely love 'em because it's a species that I cut my teeth on when first getting into bird photography. They hold a special spot in my heart :giggle:

Autumn is in full swing here, so I tried to work some of that color into my shots:

They're a bird that are very shy at first, but once they get used to you being there, you can move around and set up shots almost at will. At one point, I had one sit completely still and I walked 180 around it, trying to compose. In post, getting the right white balance is tricky because that blue-ish sub-plumage on their belly makes you think you need to warm things up to compensate.
