Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I am in the US and myZ8 is affected. When filling in the necessary information to create the UPS label you have to select your camera. It has limited options and none of them is a Z8. It also will not let you continue until you select something. So i had to select a Z7 and added a note the the form that its a Z8. I think i will wait till Monday and call them, as i dont want it going to the wrong place. The label is sending it to Signal Hill in California.

I'm in the US and my instructions said to select the Z9 on the following page (even though this is for the Z8), I think choosing the body only has to do with which weight the UPS label would be set to, I chose Z9 and my UPS label says 2 lbs.

I talked to Nikon USA today to understand how long the turnaround will be (I have a trip to Alaska in 2 1/2 weeks). They have a standard script for the reps that says wait times depend on incoming orders, but expect 7-10 days required for service, although they will try to expedite. I specifically asked if parts are in stock and the rep said yes. I am not going to take a chance sending it in before my trip, but that leaves me rather uncomfortable. I'll have my Z9, but typically will use 2 bodies and lenses. I also just sold my Z7II last night; so that isn't an option. I will probably bring my wife's OM-1 and 12-100 as a back-up.

I would like a better explanation of the problem- if anyone can answer these questions it would be very helpful:

If the problem specific to a combination of lens and body, or if a body is affected, does it affect mounting all lenses?

Is the problem intermittent or once it occurs will it happen consistently?

Once the problem occurs, does it prevent any use of the body until repaired?

Larry
I don’t work for Nikon…but since the notice is relatively low key I think the answer to all of them is “it depends“ and that the overall number of problems is relatively low. I’m in the UK right now with mine…and the @4-30 and 24-120 do not exhibit any problem…and the 100-400 and 40l/4.5 amd at least the 1.4 TC don’t either. So…take a deep breath and get it fixed as soon as practicable…and in the meantime make sure the lens is locked on when mounting…and have a glass or three of wine. 😀😀

But, I have to pay to pack it up safely in a box to send back to them. I've heard one person say it cost them $36+ to get UPS to pack it up. Ok, $36 is not a lot of money, but I'm in the process of paying $4,000 for this camera so I can pay another $36 to get their manufacturing issue fixed. I think it shouldn't cost anyone anything. I fear that if I pack it up and something happens shipping it back and it gets damaged, I'll be out $4,000.
I don’t get the “it costs me to pack it” comments…not particularly directed at you, just replying but it’s a general I don’t get it. We get at least @ Amazon box a week and have a stack of assorted boxes we keep for whatever…and have bubble wrap and package tape anyway…so it’s a matter of 3 minutes of effort to pack and we drive past the UPS store T least 3x a week anyway. So the only cost is not havin*nit for a week or two.

The UPS Store I went to in Cleveland packed it up for free, I couldn’t believe it!

I would try all the lens you intent to take to AK with you on both bodies. If they fit, you are all set.

Read the recall, made the mistake of going to the NPS site first and filling out the form there, then downloaded the label and found out I could not send it in that way as the label was not one that paid for shipping. Then went to the recall site, filled out the paperwork, mine was weird when it got to the shipping label, saying something along the lines of "we're doing this as a guest" (even though I was signed in) but I followed the instructions and was allowed to receive a shipping label. Printed it up and dropped off today, hoping to avoid the larger rush that will ensue. I do love my Z8 so hoping to get it back soonest but no plans right now for going anyplace where I need it and I do have the Z9, among many other cameras.

I have not even taken even one image with my new Z8. I had not even put a lens on it yet. After reading this thread I decided it might be good to try mounting a lens. I tried mounting the FTZII adapter (since I have several F mount lenses) and it was handy. The FTZ got tight to the point where I felt I would be forcing it if I went any farther. It never clicked/locked in. The only Z mount lens we have is on my wife's z50. I tried it on the z8 and it worked as would be expected. I need to be able to use my F mount lenses. I packaged it up following the instructions from Nikon and shipped it today. I still have my D500 and D850 if I want/need a camera.

I hope the repair fixes the FTZ adapter problem but I had, and I still have that adapter, the same problem with the FTZI adapter. Every time I used it I thought I was going to damage something, I could hear it scrunch, although it never did and I could get it hooked on to use. When I got the FTZ II adapter I did not have that problem. The z8 problem, from what I read, is different but it could be connected. I hope so for your sake.

My “Z9” multi selector down button is ignoring when pressed. So I sent it in NPS to be fixed. I hope I won’t have to wait forever because its all hands on deck to fix the Z8.

Meanwhile my Z8 shows effected. It doesn’t show any signs of issues. Lenses lock properly. I can’t stay without a camera. I will wait until I get the Z9 back. But my question is, is it safe to shoot with it if the lens locks/clicks in? Or there is a risk the lens might fall off? I can’t take such a chance holding it above babies.

So all my lenses are locking, but lens release button itself has following behaviour:

Sometimes can be smoothly pressed all the way down to unlock the lens.
But sometimes has some resistance when you press it and goes down with a click or ‘tuck’ sound.

Is this behaviour normal?

Just for the comunity info, as I wrote before, my camera is also in the Nikon list.
I checked all my lenses and the FTZ II adapter and have the same behavior that Garuna described.
All the Z lenses lock-in without problem. However, the 50mm f/1.8 and the FTZ II adapter, when I press the lens release button it doesn't go in smoothly and clicks to get the lens released.
