Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I ended up sending mine back in even though I had only had it for four days. The only lens I had mounted on it to date was the 24-120 S; it went on fine, but there was an odd bit of hesitancy (for lack of a better word) inconsistent with my experience on other bodies. It will be interesting to see what it feels like when mounting and removing lenses when it returns.
Nikon service told that 90 % of the recalled camera don’t have any issues, but they have to check them. It is better to check it now to make sure that we don’t have a problem while we are in a trip.

Mine just got delivered to Nikon this morning, hoping it's a quick check and turnaround. Best to get it done ASAP and not have to worry about it suddenly failing on me when I'm on a trip or in the middle of nowhere and can't get it in for repair.

Read that ~6000 Z8s from across the world are affected, so hoping each repair place isn't swamped too badly.

On a somewhat related note, I ordered a Z8 for my friend back on May 29th and my dealer was expecting a shipment of Z8s to be there the following week.
Well that "following week" has turned into delay after delay after delay. I thought it was going to be the Z1.4TC, FTZII or the 400/4.5 lens that was going to delay the order but all of that is now in stock waiting on the Z8.

My dealer has been giving me updated ETAs on the Z8 with the last one being June 25th...come and gone. He now says Nikon won't give an ETA because of the Z8 recall. Hoping this gets sorted soon so Nikon can get my friend her Z8 and new Nikon mirrorless kit.

I'm in Canada but I see B&H is estimating July 4th for the Z8 to be back in stock. Hope that is true for Canada also.

The UPS Store I went to in Cleveland packed it up for free, I couldn’t believe it!
Afraid that wouldn't happen here. I've scrounged around for a box my husband hasn't already recycled. I hope it works out. Not sure what filler I'll use to keep the camera from bouncing around in the box, even wrapped in bubble wrap. I don't get newspapers anymore, maybe I can use all those ridiculous plastic store bags. Wondering if Nikon would fix anything that gets damaged in the box while they have it. Probably not. $4,000 for a camera. *sigh*

I just checked and my Z8 is affected.

However, I just spent a week shooting the Z8 with the 24-70, 100-400 and 400 f4.5. No problems at all. So I will wait a while to send in my Z8 until the volume of repair submittals slacks off a bit.
I have the label printed, but I'm also in no big hurry. Maybe a better box will show up on my doorstep. My husband and I order lots of stuff. Some of those big pillow wrap might be nice, we never keep those. Maybe when my 180-600 comes (ha ha, not holding my breath even though I pre-ordered it) might have some in the packaging.

My thoughts exactly. I've only used mine with one lens so far but will see how it mates up with the FTZ and with my only other Z lens. If that works I'll wait till this fall to send it in.

Ditto per my comment above.

Has anybody heard of timeframes from the service center in Jericho, NY? I've got my printing label and boxing material all set. I've had no problems with several different Z lenses as well as using the FTZ. I don't want to part with my camera but I'm thinking about just sending it off and getting it done sooner rather than later.

I just got the confirmation email from Nikon (NY) that they have received my camera and it is in the system (3:30 pm Tuesday). I had checked with UPS and they had dropped it off at Nikon on Monday at 10:30 am. Now hopefully the turnaround will be quick.

Will be interested in seeing how long it takes.

So basically yours got logged in by the next afternoon. Mine was delivered at 11:39 today so it may be telling to see how long it takes to get logged in (hopefully by tomorrow afternoon). But if they got a bunch of them it may slow that process down...
(grumble, grumble, I shoulda waited, I shoulda waited)

I was told 7-10 day turnaround time by Nikon. Lets see how that works out!

May be a good idea to save your settings on your card (and on your computer as backup) before sending in, if Nikon has to reset the camera it'll be good to have a .BIN backup to restore all your settings if they do a factory reset. SETUP MENU > Save/load menu settings > Save menu settings
My last few cameras that came back from Nikon were all factory reset. Lesson learned (after the second time)

Spoke to Nikon USA Today, I asked about the fact they got so many Z8 to check, how are they handling it? He said that they are preparing for it before the advisory. Smart move.

My Z9 is there for repair. Once I get that back I can send in the Z8.

I’m curious if they actually replace something in the mount, or simply mount a lens to verify the click and ship it back.

I certainly hope not. I don't need to fool around with boxes and packing and send it off to New York when I can do that just fine myself. My camera so far appears to have no issues with any lens I've put on. Clicks and locks.

From Nikon Canada, I understood that they will change the mount to make sure they won’t be any problème.

I had this as well wtih the FTZii. It just didn't feel right, compared to my D610 and my D500. It took a bit of extra twisting force to get it to lock in place, that was my first concern. I've not taken the FTZii off since because... well, I don't have any Z lenses :D

I am very disappointed with Nikon. It is hard to believe that quality control did not catch this. I might expect this on a $200 camera. Only one of my lens locks. The FTZ convertor locks so I will use my F mount lens until I can send it in.

not trying to disagree, but this is one outcome of the market pressure to have cheaper and cheaper things. nikon could have made all the parts in-house instead of outsourcing. but we were happy when the camera cost significantly less than its competitors and puts so much functionality inside.

and we were all happy to criticize the delays in getting a new camera out.

well, nikon is pressured to deliver more, faster and cheaper. it’s a balancing act. do i wish they got it perfect? sure. but i bet they wish that harder than either of us.

this isn’t just a nikon thing, everyone is struggling to get the balance right and most companies aren’t doing it perfectly

Agreed.
Stuff happens.
IMO, Nikon has stepped up to the plate to recall all suspect cameras and either fix 'em or bless 'em and send them back.
it's an inconvenience for us but Nikon is going to pay a heavy bill for this recall. We should be thankful they stepped up and didn't go into denial mode (like the D600).

FYI:
My Z8 was delivered to Nikon yesterday at 11:39. I have just now received the email confirmation from Nikon along with a service order number. It took less than 24 hours for Nikon to receive and log it into their system. I've got no complaints so far (tho the game has just begun).

It is pretty hard to deny putting $4000 lens on a $4000 body out of the box and it will not lock.
