Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

It is pretty hard to deny putting $4000 lens on a $4000 body out of the box and it will not lock.
True enough. But they could have just handled those issues on a case by case basis and not go all out with a recall.
The recall ensures our cameras don't have any issues with any lenses, including future lenses. I much appreciate that approach vs finding out in a year than my brand new Z lens won't mount.

I will be interested in learning what they do with these bodies after they receive it. Will Nikon tell us whether a camera was inspected and no issue was found, or the mount was changed. I think they will not tell perhaps and everyone will keep guessing :)

AFAIK, they'll tell everyone exactly what they did on the paper they return with your camera.

Yes, you will get a repair report.

Nikon does not say how many cameras it believes are affected. However, Nikon Rumors reports that a Twitter user in Japan, @nankadaione, has determined that 6,630 units are affected by the recall, with serial numbers ranging from 2002516 to 2009146.
Err,
Those are Japanese Serial Numbers.
US Serial numbers begin with 3....
So that estimate is for Japan only....

By strategically entering serial numbers at the Nikon link for affected cameras, #3010297 is the highest affected number currently in the system. I don't know the starting serial number so can't say how many are affected under the advisory.

Well I guess I am one of the unlucky FEW.
Yes you are one of the few that actually have the problem. It seems 99% of the recalled units don't actually have a problem with mounting lenses but Nikon is using an abundance of caution and replacing (or at least checking) a large batch of cameras (seems like the entire first run of cameras that were ready on launch day and maybe even subsequent batches).

Because it seems that so few of the recalled cameras have the actual problem, it would have been next to impossible for Nikon to catch this during QC checks.

which is an interesting point, because it makes you wonder how they did decide there is a problem. i think this suggests they are paying close attention to reported problems looking for patterns and root cause

I had this as well wtih the FTZii. It just didn't feel right, compared to my D610 and my D500. It took a bit of extra twisting force to get it to lock in place, that was my first concern. I've not taken the FTZii off since because... well, I don't have any Z lenses :D
Same situation here when I first mounted the FTZii but it didn't concern me. I have had a Nikon Teleconverter 1.4III that has always been a bit stiff to mount (D850 or D500). When it took a bit more twisting to mount the FTZii onto the Z8 I just shrugged it off. It seems fine now and I haven't tried to take it off . No need to because, like you, I have no Z-Mount lenses anyway.

From Thom Hogan "Nikon today issued a service advisory for the Z8. This appears to be related to the same lens mount issue that the Z9 had, for which there’s a previous service advisory."
It's apparently the opposite as the Z9 issue. With the Z9, the lens would not release. With the Z8, the lens is not mounting and won't click into place. It's also a relatively small percentage of the cameras in the affected range that actually have the issue.

My SN is under 2400 so if thats a contiguous block => 10297-2400 ~ 7900 cams
But, since everyone in the first batch seems affected that implies there may be be more than 10,000 cams recalled. Hopefully there is a decent split between the two service centers.
