Nikon Z8

My wish, probably forlorn, is that the hidden 8 in the promotion stands for Expeed 8. Possibly built on 3 nm process with emphasis on neural cores. This is essential to keep cameras relevant.

With the Red case out of the way, they can also use the Tico Raw format in still capture and pre capture. Although lossy, it is still a very nice 12 bit file. The Z9 should be able to do 40 fps using this file format with endless buffer and Expeed 8 much more.

ooh, i like your wish

I think that for the first time in history you are left speechless!

Tom

LOL, could be, but speculation can really suck a lot of time away for me :)

Fair enough but is Z8 the only thing you are not talking about? LoL

Nah, mostly because I've been out of the loop. I don't like to speculate on rumors as much as I have in the past- I'm really, really bad at it! At this point, whatever we get is only a few days off and we'll all know then :)

I'm back but I'm not talking about anything Z8 related. :)
Good to hear you’re back.
I believe it must be very hard on you to be quiet and walk around with gaffes tape on your mouth 😀

I’m wondering if it’s not harder for you not to talk vs. everyone else stress testing their imaginations…

In either case, let’s all continue to write, so Steve can at least see our expectations while he is writing up and preparing the YT video. And also I’m sure Steve is having a good laugh reading all this…

@Steve, looking forward.

By Tico raw do u mean the existing HE and HE* formats? Or does Tico also have more raw options that Nikon isn’t using, that are actually 12bit? HE and HE* are already 14bit.

anyone want to place bets if we'll see a fw update for the z9 as part of this announcement, and if we do, what the scope will be?

All of the rumors point to specs for the rumored Z8 at being almost the same as the Z9. I just can't see this big marketing production when all that is going to be released is a camera very similar to the Z9 just a little smaller. Why the big hype and all the wait it doesn't make sense. I think we will see a significant new firmware release for the Z9 and announce the Z8, more of a "the Z9 is now even better and you can get it in two sizes" kind of announcement.

Owning a Z9 that is my hope!

If true, they are going up against the 7rV/A1 and R5, which are the best selling pro bodies. If ALL they do is have the Z9 capabilities and not overheat, they'll gain converts. They don't give a rat's ass about "competing" with the Z9, they win either way. Z9 x2 here, and I'll absolutely get a Z8 or two.

I’m pretty much in the same place you are. I have two Z9s and will likely pre-order a Z8 if it has the same capabilities and ergonomics (less the vertical grip) as the Z9, but weighs less. I do a lot of remote travel with flights on small float/bush planes and would benefit from a reduction in weight to one of my camera bodies. Would make the decisions as to what to leave at home a bit easier!

From a business perspective, a Z9 in a smaller, lighter form factor will be a smart move on Nikon‘s part (if that is what they actually do). Amortizing the R&D expense of the Z9 across the additional volume from Z8 sales is an interesting strategy, particularly in a declining industry segment. Further, if Nikon can maintain their percent gross profit and sell the Z8 at a price that’s roughly competitive with the Canon R5 or the Sony a7R5, it is innovative, perhaps not from a product perspective relative to the Z9, but in terms of strategy, manufacturing and/or sourcing.

Less moving parts in MILC so it's going to be cheaper, right? $3999?
i was just thinking:

1) i think this is a d850 replacement (a do it all prosumer camera)
2) when folks think about the d850, they think it's a $2500 (or $3000) camera, but forget it was introduced as a $4,000 (adjusted) camera

so if it does come in at around $4k, that's almost exactly how the d850 started it's lifecycle

I tend to agree with you that it's sounding an awful lot like an MILC version of the D850. If it is priced similarly that will be awesome.
