Official Nikon Z9 Launch, Info, and Discussion Thread

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

The good news is that if there is an issue, you're in the same boat as Nikon's best professional customers. Nikon historically has been good about providing warranties and updates for any defects. I suspect that the large number of Nikon Ambassadors and other professionals involved in testing means any serious bugs have already been identified and were not issues.

Nikon has already mentioned a couple of enhancements planned for firmware updates. One is 60p 8k video. The other is customizable Group AF. I was told by one senior Nikon pro that with firmware and software, at some point you need to just say it's finished and move forward. You can't delay the project to add everything you think of that it needs.
In my professional career, I was an IT Project Manager for a global company. There is a lot of wisdom in the bolded statement above.

I went to B&H (Will be my first time ordering from them) added the Z9, 70-200mm and 100-400mm lenses, 1.4x teleconverter, FTZ-II, 325GB storage card and usb card reader to my cart and removed them at least 3 times trying to decide between maxing out a credit card and get it NOW in case price goes up after pre-order or wait until real users like Steve review it or maybe wait for the Z7-III or Z8.. I WANT IT LOL but afraid to buy it. I am still learning my D500 but want the silent shutter as I tend to scare the local little birds and have to wait for them to return.

Currently playing with the B&H cart to maybe split the cost evenly between my 2 biggest credit cards, I should be able to pay one of them half way down by time the Camera actually arrives.

Total of the Cart is $15,700 (OUCH) but hey I live alone so no one to leave my money to in a will lol, and I can’t take it with me but might take 3-5 years to pay off.

EDIT: now dropped the unavailable 100-400mm lens in exchange for the available f/5.6 500mm prime for my D500/Future Z9.
One thing to consider is a couple of the items you mentioned (the 70-200, 1.4Teleconverter, and the CF-e cards) are available now. B&H may charge and ship those items right away. If you don't have a camera on which to use them then you will be sitting on them for what could be several months.

I can't tell another fellow what to do with his money but I would probably put the pre-order for the camera, 100-400 and the FTZ-II now and then wait a while to order the other stuff (at least a little closer to anticipated ship date ).

Just a thought, Hope your camera ships quite soon.

Question: I’ve ordered dual Prograde cf express type B 2.0 cobalt 1700 650 gb cards for the Z9 and I’m wondering if the QXD reader I have will work with it. Your thoughts?

Nope, you'll need a reader that supports CF Express. (Been there, tried the multiple times, usually on accident, but it never works)

To my knowlege, the only readers that can read both are the Sony MRWG1/T1 and the Thunderbolt Prograde unit (the Prograde USB does not) and that won't work unless you have Thunderbolt on your computer.

Yes, I've got that Sony reader and it reads both my CFexpress and XQD (both of which are Sony; surely that doesn't make a difference?).

Eric, I'm an engineer, and can say if product releases were dependent upon final approval from the engineers/designers/testers, we'd still be waiting for the Ford Model T's release. Nearly all of the projects that I've worked on has had an engineer who wanted a bit more time to make something just a bit better, or just one more component tested in a specific way.

Part of me wants to wait until they are all in stock after the rush but the way business supplies have been that might never happen for the next several years.

This is what I was going to order, is it the wrong one? I thought it could read both the Z9 Type B and the D500 SD cards I use.

It looks like that one will read both CFExpress B cards and SD cards that you might use in your D500. What it won't do is read the XQD cards your D500 is capable of using. I recently bought the Sony MRW-G1 CFExpress Type B/XQD Memory Card Reader because it will read both of the XQD and CFExpress cards that my D500 and D850 use. I still have a separate SD card reader to use when uploading files from SD memory cards. What you don't want is the Sony MRW-G2 CFExpress Type A/SD Memory Card Reader, which will not read the files from the CFExpress Type B or XQD memory cards

I thought it would be a good idea to put everything about the Z9 into one thread with the official announcement. We'll start with the Live Stream video:

I'll update this post with the specs as we go :)

For anyone who wants to complain about the price should come Down Under. The pre-order price is a smidge under AUD $9000. That translates to around USD $6460. The desire is strong, the wallet not so.

Regarding the new RAW formats in the Z9, they are developed by a company called "intoPix". This, I believe, is the website regarding their RAW format:

It looks like it's a lossless RAW format, whilst being similarly sized to a JPEG file. It will be interesting to see how big/small of a difference there is between the lossless compressed setting and the High Efficiency star setting, as current videos on the Z9 currently show how the 'HE' formats significantly boost the buffer depth.

Yeah they did...wish I would have sold my D6 before now....
Why I shipped my D6 to B&H today before the price dropped more. Also sold my d500 and Tamron 18-400 so no more DX camera. So for who knows how many months I will be stuck with just my D850 which I have the movie record button programmed to switch to DX mode when I would crop anyway. As you noted many moons ago the D850 has a D500 built in  My goal is to have a Z9 by April 2022

I got quotes on my lightly used D500 and Z7 but am too scared to get rid of them before having an idea of when I could get the Z9. I plan to keep my Z7ii but don’t want to have just the single camera for too long.

I had all the same thoughts ... but just decided to gamble a bit on D850 alone which I plan on keeping for my second camera after the Z9 arrives.

I saw reports somewhere about a Dec 15th ship date. If you pre ordered in time I think you will be fine.
