let's see your woodpeckers

Ira, I think this is a Hairy Woodpecker, mainly because of the large bill and unmarked white outer tail feathers. Probably a juvenile because of the crown (red but looks yellow?) being forward.
Very nice pictures!

Agreed. I also think the bill is a bit long for a Downy. More likely a Nuttall's.

Nuttall's would be VERY unusual for Loxahatchee. This bird looks more like a Hairy Woodpecker. Note the white stripe down the back; the larger bill and lack of spots on the outer tail feathers make this a Hairy Woodpecker, not Downy.

Good point. Note to self: Check facts before putting foot in mouth. I see the Nuttall’s occurs mainly in California and not anywhere else.

A few shots of a pileated woodpecker at the 6 Mile Cypress Slough Preserve in Ft. Myers, FL. He was mostly obscured by leaves but his upper half was clear

Birds are not my forte', so none of these are award winners. I do, however, find woodpeckers beautiful. Here are the eight species I have managed to photograph in my adopted home state of Arizona. In order shown they are (If any are misidentified, feel free to correct):
acorn woodpecker
arizona woodpecker
gila woodpecker
gilded flicker
hairy woodpecker
ladder-backed woodpecker
northern flicker
williamson's sapsucker

As a relatively new member, I am glad to see a themed thread like this. I would love to see more themed threads on BCG Forums.
Agreed, I enjoy themed threads where many members share images.

Here's a few that you may or may not have visited:

There are more if you spend some time searching and as always if you have an idea of any kind of thread like a different themed thread, feel free to start it.
