Nikon 180-600 Official Announcement / Discussion Thread

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Weird, but none of my preferred Canadian Nikon dealers are listing this lens for pre-order. Nikon Canada however has it listed and accepting orders. Did Nikon restrict orders to just their own site?

not the case in US at least. i pre-ordered shortly after the announcement at my local store
Well, that is why its weird. Any other time each of these sites had the pre-order option showing within minutes after the announcement. I found one store in Montreal that has it listed but no others. Gotta wonder if they werent caught be surprise and are now scrambling to get their web sites up to date.

Another OM Systems option would be, to pair the OM-1 with the Olympus 100-400mm f/5-6.3 and the price would come down to just $3,300. You could add the 300mm f/4 for $2,800 and still be at just $6,100

None the less, I think Nikon wins the bang for buck battle since I suspect the 180-600 will probably be a better lens than the Olympus 100-400.

Actually, I don't agree although I am guessing. I find the 100-400 to be not quite as good as the 500pf on a D-500 which is where I expect the new Nikon 180-600 to fall. I shot the D-500/500pf versus an A1/200-600 and the 500pf produced better shots. The 300f4 is slightly superior to the 100-400, about on par with the 500pf and from what I have seen from the OM Systems 150-400 it is simply awesome.

The Z-8/180-600 versus OM-1/100-400, in my opinion, comes down to a weight versus sensor size argument. For some, like me, 6.3# versus less than 4# is critical. For others, Not.

Here it is at my three preferred Canadian stores:

If you're going to be the owner of this sweet lens, and you are in need of a bag to fit it, here's a great article I found over on alphashooters that shows different sized bags for the Sony 200-600, which is of similar size to the 180-600: https://www.alphashooters.com/sony-200-600-bag-guide/
That is a brilliant list, but wouldn't you know after perusing all of them the one I liked the most was the Manfrotto Large Advanced Befree Messenger Bag only to find out that bag is discontinued :( Think Tank has similar but don't like the style so that's a pass. Maybe Think Tank's digital holster 150 might be the best as I like minimalist, if I want big I'll grab my LowePro Backpack which holds everything and the kitchen sink ;)

Over the last 6 months, I ended up buying all 3 of the Mindshift Backlight bags, so now I don't have to wonder anymore  At some point I'll probably pare down to two, but by then I'll really know which is best!

I also went ahead and pre-ordered the 180-600, because it's starting to make a lot of sense for my use case, and may accomplish in one lens what I'm currently doing with two.

The Mindshift Backlight 18L has been in my wishlist on BH for several years now, just have not had a "need" for it, but it is smaller than my LowePro so maybe it would be something I would use more...

Same - I was really surprised when I saw those comparisons. Different countries seem to have different policies. For instance, here the Nikon rep has to be on-site and with the lens at all times, yet Jen Wagner in Australia had the lens for a week - I doubt Nikon was with him the entire time. So, it seems maybe each region sets their own policies or something.
Keep in mind Ricci is employed by Nikon. He’s based at the Nikon school in London and has access to everything Nikon UK can get a hold of. I‘m not sure if Nikon reps uk, Europe or elsewhere are employees or not, or what their policies may be. Ricci’s been around for a long time. He has the contacts. Good bloke.

The Nikon 200-500 was a perfect fit for the Lowepro 13x32 lens case.
200-500 is 267mm long

the case also fits a Z8 with the z 70-200 attached.
the z70-200 is 220mm so it’ll also fit with the z100-400 attached .

The z 180-600 at 315mm is too long for that lens case. Shame.

just mentioning in case anyone is interested.
sorry to hijack the thread. Oops 😬

Aha, they must have just added it. One of my favorite stores but they didnt have it on when I posted my comments above. Vistek and Henry's still mia

I just pre-ordered at B&H. Shhhhhhh, my husband's going to have a fit! I just got the Z8 kit with the 24-120, haven't paid Payboo yet, but I will any day now. Dang, I might have to get a job!!!! 😁

A local camera shop is having a cash for used cameras and gear next month. Maybe now's the time to look at all the old stuff and get rid of it.

I know, and I agree he's a really good guy. It just seems odd that Nikon would allow any kind of sharpness tests with a prototype lens by anyone.

The 100-400 does well with the 1.4TC and that'll be the route I take to get from 400 to 560 (tho I have not tried this combo yet as I'm still waiting on the zTC)
Put another way.....If the 100-400 works as well with the 1.4 TC as everyone states that makes the 180-600 too big and heavy (more than a pound and 3.5" longer) for me to monkey around with it. Besides, I'm not a fan of the 1 ring lenses. Give up manual focus for exposure comp? I don't like that tradeoff. I realize they kept the cost down with no dedicated focus ring or LFn2 or Mem set buttons but they just dumbed it down too much for my tastes.
I agree that the 100-400mm with the TC 1.4x probably is at least as good as the 180-600mm (we will find out) and gives more flexibility with less to carry around. In many ways I would prefer it (and would not have to shop for a new bag just when I thought I was done :( ) Unfortunately the combination is also nearly twice as expensive. So I am happy with the 180-600mm option and will give it a serious try.

I have the 100-400. I was not happy with the 1.4TC but I might not have had a great copy. It didn't fit tight like my lens do. I ordered the 180-600. I will be happy to have both for different situations and will compare them. I may find someone close by with a 1.4TC and test a different copy.

It sure sounds like a wonderful lens. I think everyone who gets it will be happy.
As for bags, I hear ya....don't get me started. Just when everything is settled "one little change" (lol) means shopping for a bag again....

Most folks I've heard from say thats a good combo. I don't have the 1.4TC yet so I'm hoping but we shall see...

Yeah, I’ve been really impressed with the results I’ve gotten from the 100-400 + 1.4TC, which I wasn’t expecting at all. Great combo for walk-around and travel.
I know it's not popular but I am getting good results with my 70-200 f/2.8 S and 2.0 TC, granted this is a stop gap tool until I find something better (I was not too happy with the AF speed of the 100-400 S with Z6), but this was also a decision based on Z6 files, maybe with Z7/Z8 resolution it's a different story, but I decided to stay with this combo for what I do (back in the 90's I had dreams of becoming the next Galen Rowell or John Shaw, but I couldn't make any money at landscape and wildlife so ended up becoming a professional wedding and portrait photographer which helped pay for my nature photography hobby). Back to the thread subject, the 180-600 intrigues me quite a bit because I am hoping it will compliment my 70-200 and TC combo enough that I won't need to consider the 100-400, but I may consider the 400 f/4.5 at some point if I feel the need for a faster lens...

Ricci has a great video comparing the 70-200 Z 2.8 with the 2.0 TC (and 1.4) to other lens alternatives. In short, he agrees it’s a good combo.

In my view Nikon has done an excellent job of getting information about the lens out to prospective buyers through influencers. Quite honestly, reading any one review was all that was needed to make a decision.

My Review
1- Not a Pro/S lens. Some features are not available but look at the price.
2-Higher minimum F/stop than a Pro/s lens but look at the price.
3-Build quality is robust but not quite to Pro/S standards but look at the price
4-Overall this lens is not up to PRO/S standards. A similar PRO lens is better but NOT much but look at the price.

Actually, I viewed a comparison of the OM Systems 100-400 lens versus the PRO OM Systems 150-400. Reviewers quote, "The 150-400 is better but NOT MUCH"
