Nikon 180-600 Official Announcement / Discussion Thread

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

You don't find it odd that the roadmap goes from a 200-600mm for years to a 180-600mm overnight?
Considering NikonRumors has been suggesting for months now that it would be 180-600, “some” people would not find it odd nor the fact that it was overnight since they would have seen this info and been prepared for its release.

But, taking that info out of the equation, not the first time Nikon has done this as they originally listed the 24-120 as 24-105 and pulled the same “magic” trick.

The video reviewers I’ve watched say that their time with the two new lenses was very limited—just an hour or two. He wasn’t quite as clear but Ricci may not have had much shooting time, either.
I Think Jared P. had it for at least two days, Jan W. for a week, and Ricci possibly for much longer than either of them. I'd love to have access to one of these prototypes for more time, that's for sure :) Still, I'm very glad Nikon was able to give me what time they could between our schedules.

Although I have some awesome Z glass I ordered one as well. I think this is going to be an awesome lens to walk with @ 4.3lbs attached to the Z8, much like the Sony A1 and 200-600. I know those with better glass may not need this lens but I'm sure it will clean up well (Topaz Ai, etc) and be a great lens for hiking down the beach or a place you know it will have nice backgrounds.

I really appreciate having your opinion on this lens, even though your time with it was limited. I give great weight to your point of view because your sincerity is clear and your advice is spot-on. I’m a better photographer because of it. Thank you!

My take on this lens - it's an extra 100mm on the high end and 20mm less on the lower end, weighs less, has an internal zoom, and going from 180 to 600mm in such a small turn of the dial - this is enough to make this lens a winner and over the 200-500mm.

How bad can the image quality possibly can be? I don't think it's going to be 'bad' and will equate to the IQ of the 200-500mm, but hoping better. Steven's initial feedback based on his pre-production copy is sharp, so where is the doubt?

I couldn't agree more. @Steve has been the single greatest source of quality information for my wildlife photography since I discovered him around 2018/2019. He and Morten Hilmer are my favorite photography YouTubers (Steve for everything technical and Morten more so for stylistic inspriation).

THANK YOU @Steve, for everything you do!

The lens I want is the yet to be released S version of the Sigma 60-600mm lens but for the time being the 200-600mm will be useful, particarly when shooting video with a tripod and video head.

When I placed an order by phone with B&H earlier today the salesperson said I was the first person to place an order with them. Evidenly people are hesitant to purchase. For me the $1700 price was enticing at this point in time.

It is nice that the 180-600mm takes a 95mm filter so I can use the one I bought for the 200-500mm lens and now used with the 800mm PF lens.
The person was probably not correct ... they may have meant with them or over the phone ... I know of at least 2 people who had placed pre-orders with B&H right after the B&H announcement e mail came out last night ... I got B&H e mail at 10:12 PM MDT right after I got @Steve e mail at 10:18 with the link to his video. The 2 people I know said they ordered from B&H before steve's video was done.

What's the aperture at 500mm? If more than 5.6 it's too slow.
According to everything I've seen, the aperture at 500mm is 6.3. I'm not sure why that's "too slow"....all things considered. I shot with a D500 + Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 for several years with very pleasing results. I have no reason to believe this lens will produce anything less. If you need faster than f/5.6 at 500mm, your only options are 8-10 TIMES the price of this lens (assuming you want to stick to Z glass).

I hear you, but IMHO 5.6 which is the most I can afford is already too slow for small birds under heavy tree canopy. But you can't beat that price.

Shot at f/6.3. Could have been f/16 for that matter and I doubt anyone would know. Technique and composition helps - a ton with slower glass.

I haven't gone mirrorless yet, but this lens takes me a step closer to doing so. Having a tele-zoom that addresses most of my complaints with the 200-500 in the Nikon lineup will make the move to mirrorless more appealing. Coupled with my 500mm PF, I'd be set for most wildlife situations that arise. The camera body I want and can afford doesn't exist yet, but I'm sure it will down the line. :)

@Winston Churchill (Sir) posted this information from Ricci video I beleive.

In the field the difference between f/5.6 and f/6.3 has never been noticeable for me that is only 1/3 of a stop.

I have had the 200-500 and 500 pf at f/5.6 and there was no real noticeable difference f/stop wise in the field between them and my Tamron 150-600 G2 or Sigma 150-660 and 60-600 sport except I had more focal length with those that went out to 600mm. The only 600mm that I used where there was a noticeable difference was my Nikon 600 f/4E with it's 1 & 1/3 of a stop advantage.

I talked to a dealer who had 73 pre-orders placed before 10:30 this morning. It's a hot item.

Ricci said the apertures were as follows (at 10:42):
  • 180-300mm - f/5.6
  • 300-400mm - f/6.0
  • 400-600mm - f/6.3

I'm talking deep forest
Understood. I’ve been using my 800PF at 1/50 and 1/60 a lot to get some early morning shots I otherwise wouldn’t. Only works for still animals obviously, but I can usually squeeze a few keepers out at ISOs below 1000.

And let’s be honest - if you wouldn’t like the 6.3 you wouldn’t like the 5.6.

At f/6.3, I'm going to be relying on the VR working very well to compensate for the 1 stop difference from the f5.6 I'm used to on the 200-500mm. I wished of course it was f5.6 at the 600mm end.

Yep. I ordered from B&H just after midnight eastern time.
