Nikon 800PF Review For Wildlife Photographers (Official Discussion Thread)

Pretty much all of it I would say. His last video showing his shots and the methods behind them blew me away. That shot of the Heron was outstanding. To set yourself 4 or so hours and turn in a set of pictures as good as they were takes a lot of skill and experience. The lens? Well I guess it helped a bit lol
I think @Steve could get mind-blowing shots with a Kodak Instamatic!

I've got one of these on order but they got hit by some pretty hefty delays because of all the global issues getting materials etc. I'll hopefully be turning up this month and I'm excited to try it out. I've been using an F-stop Ajna for quite a few years and I like it a lot, especially for landscape photography. I'm hoping the kiboko v2 30L will be the one true bag to rule them all though, at least for wildlife trips.
I love my Kiboko 30L. The only "complaint" is that I don't find it the best bag for hiking. It holds gear extremely well, up to it's size limitations, but then you have no place for extra clothes, water, food, emergency gear etc. It's a terrific bag for travel, being carryon on size and all, but I find it lacking for "trekking".

I tend to agree. When hiking with it, I evict anything I don't think I'll need and put snacks and drinks in their place :)

I totally agree that you're paying for the f/4 max aperture but the post was about the two ways to get to 800mm. Either use the Nikon 800PF or use a 600mm with a 1.4 TC which gives you a max aperture of f5.6, just one third of a stop above the 800PF which I don't think is worth the considerable extra cost. I was pointing out the price difference.
If that f/4 max aperture is important to you then of course the choice is made for you but you're 'only' getting 600mm not 800mm. To get to 800mm with the Sony system is very expensive currently. I can't see Sony bringing out an 800mm lens at the Nikon price point but you never know.

For my photography I currently use a 500PF and 95% of the time I have a 1.4TC on which gets me to 700mm at f/8. So I reckon an 800 f/6.3 will give me 2/3rds of a stop extra light, 100mm extra reach and I would hope to get an improvement in focussing perfomance by using a native Z mount lens instead of an adapted F mount lens with a TC at a price I can afford.

For sure if all I wanted was 800 I'd go for a lens like 800PF over a 600/1.4TC. f/6.3 v f/5.6 doesn't matter enough to me to go for the much more expensive lens and have to use a TC to get there.

Yes, if you are always shooting at 700/8 then I'd certainly move to the 800PF. I think 800PF is going to be a lot better for IQ and AF than the 500PF/1.4TC.

The last lens I think I was excited about was probably the 500PF for many of the same reasons (although, no VR). Since the 500PF, I've had multiple exotics, including the outstanding Sony 600mm and 400mm GM lenses as well as the Canon 600 F/4 (iii). All nice glass, but they essentially are just better versions of what was there before. However, the PF versions - this 800mm in particular - actually changes how I shoot and what I can do in the field. The 500PF did, but it was a bit shorter and slower than I like at that focal length. This lens though is an even more dramatic change, at least for me. :)

Once Canon releases this bad boy....then we will all have something to get excited about....

This 600 f/4 DO at that short of a length would just be insane. I'd pay the $15K+ for it over a $6.5K 800PF.

I have the original Kiboko 30L, the Bataflae 32L and the Bataflae 26L. But I still prefer my Ajna and XL ICU. That said you should be able to pack more into the Kiboko so for air travel I will sometimes opt for the GuraGear bags. But for hiking locally and going out just walking around I much prefer the Ajna.

Let us know how you like the new Kiboko vs your Ajna.

Well Mr. @Steve Perry, you are accused of misleading a Sony user to Nikon and on top of that, draining 7,3k Euro out of his pocket...the good part is you saved me even a few thousand Euro...

I still can't believe that I cancelled my 600GM order and ordered the 800PF instead...

But your review was too good. I do not hope that Nikon gave you a prepared 800PF with outstanding bokeh and sharpness! 😁

Preordered one today…along with a Z9. I would still rather have a non grip body with Z9 or almost Z9 speed…but I’m afraid that won’t be coming…and I can always cancel the Z9 if what I want is released. Don’t really want the extra weight…and part of the reason the Z8 (or whatever) isn’t coming may be battery life or Nikon engineer bandwidth…but I want the better AF. I am very unlikely to cancel the 80l preorder compared to the. 9…because more reach is never a bad thing.

That would be an awesome camera for sure.
Yep…and a Z7III with 75% of the Z9 speed and the same AF capabilities would make me cancel the Z9 I just offered to go along with the 800. I almost never shoot portrait so the grip does zero for me. There might be less bay
ttery life with the smaller body=smaller battery…but I’m really fine with that.

I like a sealed camera because I live in this dusty hell hole.
I remember driving through ash drifts in the Columbia Basin and ash puffing up around my feet with every step after Mt. St. Hellens blew. I was on the phone with a friend in Burbank who said looks like a big storm coming and then "gotta go" the volcanoe blew. I was up there for work shortly after and that ash got in everything but ended up making for better tater soil :)

that was nuts. i was in se alaska at the time and we got a layer of ash.

I mean that's exactly what you are doing, though, isnt it? You LIVE in Nikon threads. And for someone that has the best, lightest, most perfect camera system ever, you certainly don't seem to be happy.
Some people like to poke at brand. I admit…the specs on the A1 and the various Canon products are nice but …really…switching brands is really expensive and the differences between brands are really getting picky at this point...so maybe muscle memory and menu familiarity are worth minor differences…because any current system is really just fine.

Thats exactly the same story for me. I have small hands and I am used to the small bodies of Sony now. For the weight of one Z9, I can carry two Sony bodies...AND battery life is much better.
Me too…but I ordered a Z9 today because I don’t have a lot of faith in an almost Z9 features non grip body…at least I’m in the delay queue now and I can always cancel if something more me is announced. Doubt I will cancel the lens though…then100-400 and TC on one body and the 800 on another provides a really attractive reach combo.

Yup ... my Nikon glass investment and 73 year old muscle and brain memory was tempted by Canon and Sony but have stuck it out with Nikon so far. It is to bad that you can not get Z9 features in a body with a grip/battery holder or whatever we want to call it as an option. As my wife would attest I am a bit of the odd man out in the photography world around here :)

I do shoot in portrait mode fairly often but do not move my hand position to do so since it usually happens fast and I go back and forth. My purley personal preference if for a bit more heft with the grips and more battery power and I am blessed to be able to handle the extra weight. So I have a grip with the big battery on D850 that never comes off except to replace the in body battery and recharge it now and then , and the grip with dual batteries on Z6II ... my pinkie felt lost and kept positioning my hand in a way that I had trouble finding buttons ... much better once I got the grip.

I am getting very fond of the Z100-400 with and without the TC even on the Z6II ... as noted earlier my 500 pf was about to be sold but my wife has appropriated it for her Z50 :)

I suspect once I get the 800 my wife may appropriate myn00PF for her Z50 as well…if she’s willing to carry the extra weI tht…which I’m not betting on.

In the meantime I decided to use the 800PF with a Z6II. With 800mm FL I feel need to further crop in and 24MP should be reasonable. On top fps with the Z6II is higher than with the Z7II and high iso is more clean.

Like most of us here, I am a huge advocate of Steves work and what he shares online. It seems like his latest videos on the 800pf are really making the rounds around the internets. Steves work always has an impact, but this seems like more than usual. I Kinda feel like the local boy hit a home run during the 7th game of the World Series. Woot, woot. Right on! (I came here after seeing a link to BCG on Nikon Rumors).
