Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I was away last week, giving my new Z8 its first serious outing.

On the second day I took the Z8 out of the bag and found that the 24-70/4 was no longer attached. I blamed myself for not attaching it properly, and after a few efforts managed to reattach it.

A couple of days later I logged in here and discovered that there was a recall. I checked the Nikon UK website and found that my camera was one of those affected. I am currently awaiting a date for the fix.

I urge anyone with an affected camera to register for the recall. You cannot assume that just because the problem has not affected you yet that it will not do so.

While I am unhappy to have this problem, Nikon does seem to be doing the right thing to resolve it.

I was able to track updated status by looking at the Nikon website, however, I only received one email from Nikon Service, and that was when they received/in-processed my camera, entered it into their system, and provided me with my Service Order Number (on Monday 6/26). I didn't receive any additional emails from Nikon while my camera was being serviced.
All I have received it that Nikon lady named MONICA received it, 11AM June 28. Nothing else. No order number, nothing
I don't know where to look for updates

It's on the email they sent you. It says to click on the "following link" and when you do that something comes up and it may ask you to sign, although I don't think that is really needed since there is no cost but you actually have to sign to get through it, at least I did. Reading this forum topic reminded me to look again and when I did there was a UPS tracking number and when I clicked on that it said my camera was to be delivered on wed. The email I got from them when they received it was June 28. I got nothing after that first email.

You can't track the progress on the Nikon website until they send you an email saying that they have received your camera, and are inputting it into their system with Service Order #: xxxxxx. <-- You need this SO # provided by Nikon in order to check the status of your repair work on the Nikon website.

Separately, I received a delivery confirmation notice from UPS (not Nikon) when my camera was delivered, and it indicated who had signed for the delivery. <-- This is good information to know, but is absolutely no help regarding tracking the progress of your repair at the Nikon Service Center.

Like Charles Loy, my UPS proof of service says Monica at Nikon received my Z8 at 11:26 am on 6/28, but I have received no email. That's the problem, without the email there is apparently no way to track the progress. The service advisory online instructions (where you print the UPS packing slip and label) says Nikon has "received your information" but there is no service order number, just the serial number. When I emailed Nikon to inquire of the status, they asked for the service order number. If you go back to the Z8 service advisory the only option is to create another return. A little bit of a catch-22.

Not it's not a runaround. You are just pending the next step, which will be an email from the Service Center indicating that they are entering your camera into their system (to begin the repair work) and providing you with your service order number.

The UPS delivery confirmation is just that; a notice that it has been delivered to the service center and signed for (by Monica)

The service advisory website instructions that you mention, is just a confirmation from Nikon that your camera is included in the recall notice, and that they are creating a shipping label, packing list and instructions for you, so that you can send your camera in for service.

Thanks, I must assume mine is sitting there ignored at this time. Appreciate you and others replying.

It's probably in the service queue (even if not yet logged in) and hopefully it'll be repaired in the order it was received.
(except for those pesky NPS guys who'll jump the queue... ;) )
Just kidding NPS folks, just kidding...

I do think Nikon should attempt to log in every item they receive daily and not leave folks hanging.
It just sucks when you know UPS delivered it but Nikon hasn't acknowledged receipt - especially after a couple of days.

It took a couple of days for Nikon to log mine in, but then it appears to have been repaired quickly, maybe because I am NPS? Who knows. Just happy that it is on the way home.

UPS shows Nikon (NY) just signed for my Z8, now the nail biting begins. In fairness, I do not expect to get the body back until mid to late next week, but hope for sooner...
I hope you're right - but...mine was delivered by UPS last Tuesday, got logged into the system before noon on Wednesday and looking at status just now shows it is still in the shop. I'm hoping it ships by Thursday and delivered by Saturday. Not holding my breath tho...
Good Luck!!!

Mine says "billing" now. I didn't think Nikon in Melville was open today but maybe they are. Either way with the holiday I should have it before the weekend.

Mine went into "billing" status today (Monday) and then showed "shipped" with a tracking number later in the day. Hoping I'll receive it by Wed. or so (not sure what impact the July 4 holiday will have on UPS shipping times).
Mine still says billing. Will check later this evening but I'm fine if it ships Wednesday, about 2 days to Myrtle Beach. I was able to drive to Melville in 30min when I lived on Long Island but those days are over!

note these aren't shipping out via a fast method so set your expectations accordingly

they shipped mine on 6/30 (looks like it was picked up PM of that day), and it has an ETA of 7/6. so 5-7 days depending on how you count and if you count the Fourth of July. this is from Cerritos, CA to Bothell, WA which is a bit over 1000 miles.

From my un-scientific under-sample, UPS has been trying to get more customers during the last few years, in the same zone, the ORION would schedule delivery 1-day shorter; the priority goes Air -> -> Commercial -> -> Residential, so if it's a residential address, it gets delivered last; most office & biz address can expect to get the package before 5:00 pm.

In this case, my gut feeling is Nikon is shipping all repaired within a 3-day time frame, you should get it on the 5th.

Question: Based on a recent return via FedEx to B&H and the box arrived empty.....according to B&H.

Since Nikon is providing the shipping service for the return......does that mean Nikon is ensuring the camera inside the box........in the unfortunate event that the box shows up empty at the Nikon Repair service center?

Might be a good idea to take a quick photo of the camera inside the box.....and the weight of the package before sealing it up and handing it over to the shipper.

I'm glad I decided to send my Z8 in for service when I did, even though I wasn't experiencing any issues with mounting/unmounting my lenses. I thought it would prudent to error on the side of caution regarding this matter, rather than take my chances that something might go horribly wrong sometime in the future. So I decided it was better to bite the bullet now, rather than wait any longer and take my chances that I "could have" a faulty bayonet mount on my camera.

Now I am starting see a few posts with users saying they are now experiencing issues with their lens mount, when they had not had any problems before.

I know there is never a good time to send your camera in for service, but once this problem has been dealt with, it's nice to be able to move on and have some peace of mind.
Not going back through the thread; I think the issues some have had with a particular lens 35mm??, and this problem was before--and after--sending the Z8 for service. It looks like this is a lens issue and not a body issue.
