Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Arrived Nikon, NY on Wed 10:38AM. No email from Nikon yet. Hopefully it will get checked in today. Based on what I’ve read, it sounds like Nikon, NY got really backed up starting Wed afternoon…..I’m hoping I will have it back within the 7-10 days originally noted.

My Z8 is back home again after being repaired by Nikon!
Total time away was one week (Friday 6/23 to Friday 6/30).
The paperwork provided indicates Repair Bayonet Mount, but does not provide any additional detail about what work was actually performed (sorry about the blurry images).

Can't complain about it being away for a week, actually really good service!! Let's hope now that they have more cameras in for the repair it goes quickly! I was originally told 7-10 days and so far from what I've seen and heard from others they are pretty close to that!!

My first attempt at posting sent my Z8 in Saturday the 24th UPS delivered it Wednesday 28 but have not been acknowledged of received by Nikon yet!!!!! guess its time to get out my D500.
It's not time to panic yet, as this seems to be in line with what others have reported for their wait times (before receiving confirmation from Nikon). Did you send it in to the east coast Service Center? That one seems to be a bit more backed up than the west coast center.

Yes, it's time to get reacquainted with your backup camera while you wait for the return of your Z8.

UPS was rather pokey today and my Z8 was delivered at 6pm. My repair order is exactly like SoCalRick's. It would be interesting to see if anyone's repair bill does not say "RPR Bayonet Mount" In terms of timing I dropped it off to UPS last Friday, Nikon received it on Monday and shipped it back Thursday. It arrived to me today. So 8 days total.

Yes, I guess I was getting at; what exactly did they do to repair it? Obviously it doesn't sound like it needed to be replaced.
In my experience that's a typical Nikon shop report. Very cryptic. I suppose the consider the release button assembly part of the bayonet mount. It's not actually a problem on most cameras within the batch identified. In most cases they likely inspect the button assembly and if it within tolerances replacing it isn't necessary. But it's all speculation unless Nikon becomes uncharacteristically transparent.

Estimated delivery is Wednesday the 5th. I'm hoping for Monday the 3rd as when I shipped it on Friday the 23rd they gave an estimated delivery date of Tuesday the 27th but Nikon got it on the 26th.

Based on the QC worksheet above, the inspection and cleaning appears to be the "Standard Camera Maintenance" - a service Nikon normally charges $73 to perform. That's actually a pretty comprehensive inspection and check.

At least we all get our image sensors cleaned after going through all of this!

Not that I had a lot of time with the camera beforehand to accumulate any dust on the sensor.

In general, it looks like most are actually pleased with Nikon's turnaround once they actually get their cameral back. And well we should be. NPS or not.
The actual time in Nikon's facility--business days-- is generally less than the cumulative shipping time--back and forth. And, it basically doesn't matter whether it is East Coast or West Coast.
Kudos to Nikon for taking a pro-active approach to a 'possible problem'.

datapoint, i have a UPS tracking number, eta 7/6. i shipped 6/23. processed in the CA center. if it arrives when they say, it'll be out of my hands for about two weeks, almost all of that time with UPS

I'm glad I decided to send my Z8 in for service when I did, even though I wasn't experiencing any issues with mounting/unmounting my lenses. I thought it would prudent to error on the side of caution regarding this matter, rather than take my chances that something might go horribly wrong sometime in the future. So I decided it was better to bite the bullet now, rather than wait any longer and take my chances that I "could have" a faulty bayonet mount on my camera.

Now I am starting see a few posts with users saying they are now experiencing issues with their lens mount, when they had not had any problems before.

I know there is never a good time to send your camera in for service, but once this problem has been dealt with, it's nice to be able to move on and have some peace of mind.

Did your camera just show up, or did you get an notice it was being sent?
Others share comments on this too-
The only communication I have received is an receiving agent signed it has been received.

When Nikon logs it into their system you'll get an email like this....along with a service order number you can use to track it here.

Same here. The only communication was when Nikon received it.
But if you keep checking the status on the website, they show a UPS tracking number when they send it back, and you can see the estimated arrival by clicking the UPS tracking link.

I was able to track updated status by looking at the Nikon website, however, I only received one email from Nikon Service, and that was when they received/in-processed my camera, entered it into their system, and provided me with my Service Order Number (on Monday 6/26). I didn't receive any additional emails from Nikon while my camera was being serviced.

UPS did provide me with delivery confirmation when my camera was delivered and signed for at the Nikon Service Center.

Here is the sequence of my service progress/activity:
Monday 6/26: received by Nikon and entered into their system - received email from Nikon with my SO#
Tuesday - Wednesday: In "Shop" status
Thursday: Status set to "Shipped" and a UPS Tracking number was listed
Thursday: UPS website said they had picked it up and delivery was scheduled for Friday 6/30
Friday 6/30: Camera delivered by UPS.
