Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

Not going back through the thread; I think the issues some have had with a particular lens 35mm??, and this problem was before--and after--sending the Z8 for service. It looks like this is a lens issue and not a body issue.
i’ve seen a few reports of the issue “developing”. not enough info to be sure, but it seems plausible that the issue can emerge over time

I don't think Nikon is recalling thousands of Z8's because of a lens issue. It's clearly a body issue with a failure mechanism we do not fully understand (surely Nikon does). So far we've had reported:
• All is fine
• Some lenses won't mount (lenses differs between folks reporting this - ie, the problem is not common to a single lens). To date, no one has reported a 'Z8 problem lens' that won't mount on a camera other than a Z8.
• Some lenses that did mount but no longer mount.

Ok. I found the thread concerning the mounting of the 35mm 1.8 Z..in Nikonians.org.
Some had complained about how difficult and/or tight it was to mount the lens. It turns out this was not specific to the Z8, but other Z bodies as well. It was discussed to tighten the screws on the lens mount..but not the solution. The lens needs to be sent back to Nikon..

i think he meant in that one specific case

Ah, Sometimes I do miss the obvious....doh...

I said so in the beginning

Nikon Canada has not been too impressive so far….. I filled in the form on Thursday and the response was that I would get an email with shipping label later that day or the next day.
Nothing so far so I tried to call them and was on hold for about ten minutes before being forced to leave a message which they promise to return in 24 to 48 “ business hours”

I have never heard of a time frame expressed as 24-48 “ business hours“ hopefully that doesn’t mean 3 to 6 days……

This recall is a pain in the butt ….. when I finally get the label I have to drive at least thirty minutes to the nearest Purolator office and presumably have to sign for the return which can be frustrating as Purolator up here won’t even commit to a 4 hour delivery window. Nikon Canada seems to use Purolator exclusively

First world problems I know but still frustrating ….

Here in the US, I got my label as soon as I filled out the form. You guessed it, it's all still sitting on my printer. I decided to wait until after the holiday to do anything (we have the 4th, you have Canada Day.) Not thrilled about sending it anywhere, wish I could just take it to a local center to get it fixed. This whole thing is causing too much stress. I hope Nikon is insuring this whole process, after seeing the packaging I get with orders that looks like the shipper employees played football with it.

That is not good news. I filled out the form and got the same response. In my case it has only been a little over 24 hours but reading your post I am not optimistic I will have better luck.

I suspect the process in Canada is to slow down the flow of inbound cameras. It's not good to have them arrive and just sit because of the big backlog. In the EU, that was the process from the beginning - the label is generated when they are ready to repair it. US should have done that as well. I can't imagine how much worse it would have been if they sent out a mass email notification.

Mine seems to be taking a much longer time than expected. It shipped June 23, was received June 27, and currently shows SHOP. There was a big NPS priority sticker on the box. It's as though it was going through traffic and every time the driver changed lanes, that lane stopped completely. At this point I might have it early next week - a 14-17 day trip.

If you can wait, I suggest waiting at least 2-3 weeks.

I have no NPS sticker on mime but it's been in the shop since 6/27 as well. Hopefully it gets looked at this week.
I certainly agree that Nikon US should have handled this recall better. I do like the idea of filling out the form and having them send you a Shipping label when they are ready for it. Shouldn't be that hard to do.

One other word of caution...UPS is scheduled to strike on August first. I would not want my camera shipped anywhere around that timeframe or it may be sitting in a warehouse for however long the strike lasts.

My Z8 had no issues mounting my Z lenses or the FTZ II adaptor. I dropped my Z8 off at Nikon Melville this morning. They said it should take about five business days to complete the repair.
I just got notified to pick up my z8. I dropped it off Thursday, June 29th, at 8:30 AM and got called this morning, July 5th, around 9 AM. I picked it up today, July 5th. Since yesterday was a holiday, I think this was done in 3 business days, assuming they do not work on Saturday or Sunday.

Got my email from Nikon on 6/30 that my camera was received. Checked this morning and now have a tracking number. Not picked up by UPS yet so no expected delivery day. Hopefully it will go out today. Not an NPS and mine went to New York for service.

Seems like you jumped the line....Eric and mine were logged in on the 27th but are still in the shop.
Good for you but this is a bit disconcerting from my perspective...

Random thought...is it possible yours did not require repair whereas mine and Eric's did??
Oh well....

All UPS to NY go into their Jericho, NY location. Most--go through the 'repair process' in this location. Some may require another pair of eyes and may be sent to Nikon's Melville location. Literally around the corner. This could be the reason for one Z8 taking a little longer than another that went into the shop the same day.

That sounds real to me...thanks...

Mine says shipped today but still not available on UPS to track. They probably didn't pick it up yet so will check later! I'll probably get it back Friday if not it would be Monday.

Has anyone heard a specific instance of a camera and lens that was mounting fine, and has subsequently developed a problem?

I have tested all of my lenses, TC and FTZs multiple times and everything seems fine. I'm leaving for Alaska next week and did not want to risk not having the body back. Now my decision is whether I bring my wife's OM-1 as a back-up on this trip (3rd body)

I have the label to send, but going to hold off now since talks between the Teamsters and UPS have broken down. I'd rather it sit and wait here than in some UPS facility (or on a truck.) Unless Nikon wants to give me a label for another shipper. Last strike lasted 15 days. I can wait, so far no problems with mine.

They won't strike until their contract expires. Don't let your UPS packages travel past Aug 1st if there's a strike that's the most likely date.
