Nikon Z8 - Service Advisory

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Looks like I got a delay until tomorrow due to weather conditions in the place it stopped (Columbia, SC) before getting to Myrtle Beach. Oh well tomorrow is good!

Just cross your fingers you don't get the same tech working on your camera as this guy did (NY) over on FM forum....what a nightmare:

"I Got My Z8 Back From Nikon Today Boy Am I Pissed They Broke It"

But after some heated discussions with a manager in person in NY he at least got some resolution although without being able to go in person I doubt this would have ended well:

"I Went To Nikon This Morning Am Getting A New Camera"

Congrats, and thanks for the timetable. Are you NPS?
Mine has been in the shop since 6/28 (2 days sooner than yours) so maybe I need to make a call.

Any other getting theirs back from NY? When did you get the Service Order email?

I got my Z8 back today. I was a bit surprised the UPS required no signature for it. I was disappointed that they reset the camera settings. I wrote them a note and asked them to leave the settings alone. Thankfully I followed Steve's advice in the Z8 shooting guide and saved a copy of my settings. Loaded everything back in and I am in good shape. Thanks Steve !!!!.. Saved the day for me. I was not looking forward to starting all over again.

Sent my Z8 in for repair of the Service advisory and got in back within 11 days. Pretty quick I would say. They repaired the bayonet mount and also cleaned the sensor and checked auto focus, sensor, shutter mechanism, checked AE operation, and a few other things. I sent mine as soon as I heard about the recall hoping to miss any rush. Seemed to work.

Not NPS, Received Service Order email June 30.

My West Coast experience was that they didn't reset my camera settings during the service. I wonder if that decision is decided by the individual technician?

UPS says my Z8 was signed for by agent in NY Service Center on 07/03, I have not received any email confirmation from Nikon as of yet, I don't want to hassle them but curious how long I should wait before I contact them and ask for verification of receipt and that my body is in the repair queue. Thoughts?

use the web site. it seems like emails are not going out. see this post on how to track status from their web site: https://bcgforums.com/index.php?threads/nikon-z8-service-advisory.25630/post-292202

It looks to me like Nikon is using a subcontractor for the mount service. My UPS return shipping information is from Nikon / Camtech Services. There is a company called Camtech Services at the same address in Jericho, NY. This company was also the one that did the RAW video upgrade service for Nikon cameras. I've seen this before on an invoice - Nikon regularly uses subcontractors for service. I'm not sure there is any difference in the quality of the work since this is a long time relationship. I've previously seen an invoice from a different company in the same area used by Nikon. It's a typical office/warehouse location, but it has a lot of solar panels on the roof. Maybe part of Nikon's green initiatives? It's also got a UPS location two doors away in the same complex.

Thank you for that, I checked out the link - https://repair.nikonusa.com/en/approval/ApprovalLogin but unfortunately I have not been given a Service Number, I only have a case number from when I submitted for the service, I tried using my Case Number as the Service Number but it tells me "Login Failed". I decided to give Nikon Support (USA) a call and they said they are still processing received shipments from Friday June 30th today and to allow 1-2 business days (because mine arrived on Monday 07/03) for my Z8 to be processed in the system, at that time they will send the email with the Service Number that I can begin tracking in the above link.

Members that have received their Z8 back from service, just curoius, how well the camera was packed in return box?
I would say that mine was packed secure enough for normal shipping transport. The camera was first wrapped in plastic, then bubblewrap and then placed in the middle of a box filled with styrofoam peanuts.

The exterior of the box was pristine when it arrived. Of course all bets are off if any UPS personnel start dropkicking packages around. ;)

My Z8 was serviced in NY. It was out and back in 11 days (including over the July 4 holiday weekend). Everything seems to function as it should, and my custom settings were not deleted or changed. Wish I hadn't had to send it back, but I'm satisfied with how Nikon has responded to this issue.

I contacted my dealer today and was told "if it's working OK, do nothing" - I asked for that to be ratified by the Nikon importer here in New Zealand, and I'm waiting on them. Mine's working A-OK with all lenses, all TCs and LM-NZ adaptors.
Maurie,
Ask your dealer to give you a letter stating that he will replace any damaged lenses or the Z8 body if something does happen. And if the Nikon importer tells you the same, then get the same thing in writing as well.

Nikon NY received my Z8 the morning of 6/28. Still no email. When I called today, I was told the shop was closed Monday and Tuesday and to wait one more day. If no email by 3:30 pm (when the shop closes for the day) tomorrow, I am to call again and they will try to trace it, but that will take several days.

Progress. :)
Last evening my Z8 was still in the shop. This morning it says shipped (altho no tracking # yet).

UPS delivered it to Nikon on 6/27 and Nikon is shipping back on 7/7 or 10 days at the facility.

I hope they get out acknowledgment letters and service order numbers to all who've not gotten word back. It's disconcerting to know UPS delivered when Nikon takes days to acknowledge it. Given some of the responses above it seems clear that Nikon is just plain swamped. And that is not a good thing as it makes them hurry a bit more and we wait a bit longer. They need to change their recall procedures and send a shipping label when they are able to deal with it in a timely manner and not have a mass of cameras show up within a few days.
