Sony A1-2

I’m not excited about a price increase either but how much I will be willing to swallow will depend a lot on how much AF improves.
if it’s better than A1 and not as good as A9iii - not worth $1 - like others have said, fw 1.2 was practically there before
if it’s matching the A9iii - with all the other features being added (it needs to have all the existing goodies, otherwise it’s a joke) - it might be worth a few hundred $
if it’s a new breakthrough in AF, surpassing the A9iii by a fair margin, it might motivate me to upgrade - but I don’t know if they can get there with processors and algorithms only, or if it will take quad pixel AF like canon‘s (which would not be likely on the same chip as the A1, unless ‘same’ is meant loosely).

Very well said and I could t agree more. No matter what anyone says at least with my camera. It was very noticeably better on 1.20. I’m usually pretty loyal as a customer to brands once I find one that works good. Having said that, with them making my camera worse with firmware, that is definitely going to influence making another purchase from them as a company. If they think they’re going to leave these current generation A1 bodies the way they are for folks like myself that are having trouble, then I think they’re going to find out the hard way through future sales that that’s not going to fly. I think the worst part for me is whenever you call them, they are basically dismissive of any problems and basically insinuate user error. I have had an A1 body for over two years now. I shoot with it 5 to 7 days a week a few hours a day. Having said that, after that amount of time You know when something‘s wrong. I had a similar situation with them with one of the hot shoe microphones. They basically were denying anything was wrong with the microphone, but after getting it back and testing, it found out and did have an internal failure. They did send me a new one right away, but we’re very dismissive on the phone prior to that. I think for me at this point, it would be more out of spite for me not to buy one lol. If they do introduce a version 3.0 firmware soon and it gets the camera back to where it was, then, at that point, I might consider getting another one.

There's a return sum for your A1 of course, should you choose to upgrade, you won't be paying 7-8k for the switch.
Assuming you can get 3500,- for the A1, it would be 4k for the new A1II.
And for that, you get a brandnew body.

Still a lót of money though, and I assume the price for an used A1 will rapidly start to fall after the release of the new mkII, and the market for used A1 will start to saturate, so a benefit for the early adopters.
did you have your A1 for free???

I'd probably keep my A1 as a backup body and sell my older A7RIV and A9II. Heck, if the price is too rich, I might just snap up a used A1 and wait until the prices on the A1II's come down.

That was sort of my thought as well because I would imagine a mint condition. A1 will be a dime a dozen after it released.

The price for the A1 never came down in 3,5 years where I live. Ok, it came down somewhere along the road with €100,- , but that is an insignificant amount.
Based on this, I am not expecting the price for the A1 II, whatever it will be, to ever come down.
I will stick with the A1 myself though, it does all I want it to and more.

I mean used ones.

I'm not paying $7000 much less $7500.
Same here. I’ll use my A1 until I’m tired of it or it malfunctions then most likely buy another body similar to my A7RV which honestly is fine for me. The A7V might be a good choice as well and have less rolling shutter than the RV. They’re going to price themselves out of the market considering what Nikon charges for comparable models.

I don't think Sony cares about the pro/hobbyist wildlife/bird market.

I'll happily pay $7500..................the A1 is by FAR the best camera I've ever used in a 35+ year professional career. The A1ii will be that much better and now I can have an A1 as a back up. It's just a tool I'll use for my business and it will eventually pay for itself. When it's released I expect the A1ii will become the new industry standard. For the hobbyist it may be a different feeling.

I think you summarized the dilemma right here. Sony sees the A1 as pro only (and the occasional hobbyist that can afford it as a nice benefit) but the problem is that their line doesn’t offer wildlife hobbyists an alternative that is good enough. There is no z8 or r5mkii at Sony. The A1 was such a game changer when it came out that many of us came to Sony for that camera and bit the painful bullet. We’ll have to see if the A1ii is compelling enough to get us to upgrade.

Very well said and you are certainly correct. If you want a high mp fast camera it is the A1. For me the biggest issue is the current firmware situation with the A1. They could care less about us that bought the first one. Even a professional photographer has far better alternatives considering price.

What does this say about Sony's approach?
They appear to want to conquer the professional market above all when it comes to high performance cameras.
Nikon has a different approach it seems, and wants to cater to the amateur action shooter.
The Z8 is a very good option.
