Nikon Z8

If the Z8 is little more than a gripless Z9 and less expensive to boot. Id say the Z9 is gonna get firmware 4.0 at the same time or there is something more coming on the 10th. The teaser campaign doesnt make much sense for something as underwhelming as the purported Z8.

For stills it is essentially a grip less Z9! I have a hunch the video features may not be the same, particularly the 8k60/4K 120.
It looks really promising. It looks like it might not have gps, I was hoping for that. I use 4K 120p often but never shoot 8k. Trying to wait patiently until the 10th. 😊

I feel the Z6 will be in the 24-30mp range, Z7II will have a significant bump in MP, either Sony’s 60mp or maybe even higher like an 80+no and this will be the A7R5 equivalent. What I’m not sure is if the Z6 will have a stacked or a normal BSI sensor. I hope Nikon prices the Z8 competitively as well and market it as a true D850 replacement and in that price point it will be a killer offering.
if true, i'm very conflicted. i DO want to replace my backup camera which is a z6ii and this should work for that. i do want a common interface with the z9 and i do want something that can handle action similar to the z9. that said, i really would prefer it had a 24.5MP (or similar) stacked sensor. i wonder if they'll come out with a z6iii at some point, or if everything will be 45MP or greater at this point.

Underwhelming? If the rumors are accurate, this is going to be a difficult camera to compete with. It isn’t really different than the teaser campaign Sony used for the A7iv. they Haven’t released videos like the Z9.

Yes a gripless small battery Z9 is underwhelming. Im sure the "its too heavy" crowd will buy them but at that point the Z9 sales are done for without a major update.

Hoping for open gate. They hinted about it back in '21.

open gate?

The ability to shoot video on the full sensor. Right now, Nikon (and almost all hybrids) crops video to 9x16 from the 2x3 sensor, essentially throwing away 15% of the pixels. "Real" cinema cameras use the entire sensor so you can crop it in post. Not a big deal because the sensor is so big, but it makes a big difference when you shoot anamorphic lenses or you need to stabilize the footage in post.

If what Nikon Rumors posted comparing the specs of a Z8 to a Z9 are what the Z8 ends up having, I'll still be waiting for the mythical D850 replacement. For what and how I shoot (95% landscapes), the 45mp of the D850 was the primary appeal. Having the best in class AF or high fps was and still is not important to me. So....looks like I'll be waiting for either the Z7III or maybe a Z8x.

how is that not a d850 equivalent? the d850 is the poster child for jack of all trades. remember rhat the d850 has the same af module as the d5.

if you don’t look at the full af potential of the d850 then the z7ii could be considered a d850 replacement and there’s no reason to wait for a z7iii

Thom Hogan says the same, saying he’ll still be waiting for two cameras, a Z90 and a 60+ sensor and/or pixel shift for landscape.

Meh. If those side by side specs are accurate, I'll pass. I'd rather spend a little more for a second Z9 if I felt the need for a second Z camera. The D850 was ground-breaking. This is simply Z9 trickle-down.

What Z thing I'd like to see is a modernized version of the 200 micro and a new PC lens.

I didn't write that these rumored Z8 specs were not a D850 equivalent. For me they are not a D850 replacement. I bought a D850 in 2017, not because it was a "mini D5" just as some are calling the Z8 a "mini Z9". I bought my D850 because in 2017 it was the closest one could come to digital medium format without spending a small fortune. The D850 was nicknamed the "poor man's medium format" My D850 replacement needs to exceed my current D850 in the things that are important to me. I don't care about having super awesome AF from the Z9 and being able to shoot 20fps. Give me more resolution, more dynamic range, and/or pixel shift ability. I have a Z7II now. It's wonderful. Love that it is smaller and lighter than my D850. It does not replace my D850. I want my Z7II to be my backup landscape camera to what I replace my D850 for.

Why doesn’t the Z7ii replace your D850? It doesn’t offer a much difference in IQ, but the Z lenses are great and it should be able to replace the D850 for landscape.

Its the 10% of the time that I don't shoot landscapes that has me holding onto the D850. I also shoot events at my church that frequently involve people doing various activities (kids Easter egg hunt, church softball team, etc.). For that type of shooting, the D850 just does better tracking an erratically moving subject, sometimes in poor lighting. I even posted here about my troubles with the Z7II in this regard. So the D850 stays in my bag for now. I'm 100% certain the Z8 will blow both the D850 and Z7II away in that regard. I got a killer deal on my Z7II ($2100 new). I don't want to spend $3500+ just for that 10% of the time shooting scenario. I will spend $3500+ for a camera that does that 10% of the time shooting scenario, and has more resolution, and has better dynamic range. I want my jack of all trades D850 to be replaced by an even better jack of all trades Z camera. The rumored Z8 specs aren't quite there for me. Perhaps the Z7III will be.

Makes sense. I think I remember that post now. I agree, the AF on the second gen struggles in certain situations. Hopefully the Z7iii will have what you’re looking for and arrive before 2024.

275-shot battery life for the rumored Z8? Vs 700 for the Z9? Something just ain't right there... Or am I missing something?
